Koop is an electronic jazz duo from Sweden, consisting of Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson.
Koop won a Swedish Grammy Award in 2003, and received a Gold certification for sales of their most recent album, Koop Islands. Their acclaimed, orchestrated sound is achieved by slowly putting together thousands of small clips from records until the songs are ready, which helps explain the long time it takes to make a Koop album. Vocals have been provided by singers such as Cecilia Stalin, Ane Brun, Yukimi Nagano, Hilde Louise Asbjornsen, Rob Gallagher and Mikael Sundin.

The band shot to prominence when the song ‘Strange Love’ from the album ‘Waltz for Koop’ was featured in a commercial for Coca Cola.

Okay people, I’m back from Saint Maarten after a short one week trip. I’ve learned to slow down my life and make my daily life to be more of a harmonic pattern rather than random.

Before, I left for Saint Maarten about 20 DJs submitted their LIVE sets to me for first podcast for year 2010. I’ve not listened all 20 LIVE sets but I’ve randomly picked 5 LIVE sets and I’ve made my selection for the  podcast.

The re-launch of the Signum duo has brought nothing but good. A revival of the legendary producer-duo Pascal Minnaard and Ron Hagen, the guys behind ‘What You Got 4 Me’, ‘Push Through’ and the latter ‘Distant Signature’, was more than welcome to their loyal group of fans.
This time, it’s the summer’s hot sun that have inspired them. Sunny guitar and a deep and relaxing progressive sound set forth a true holiday spirit, found in ‘Riddles In The Sand’. It’s the soundtrack to anyone’s Balearic dream: catchy, groovy and luminous. The track, which the Signum guys release under their Ron Hagen & Pascal M alias, already gave prominence to Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance 2009 album.
The Omnia remix of ‘Riddles In The Sand’ is a completely different approach to its guitar-melody. Less trancy, but loaded with a top notch proghouse sound that won’t slip by unnoticed. The Ukrainian producer did a splendid job in giving the track a richer sound, and giving it a dramatic touch. Atmospheric all the way!

Hello grooveTEK Listeners,

I’ve been traveling lot this year and most my travels are work related.  Once in awhile, I enjoy getting out from my office which gives me a chance to think out of the fish tank. I’ve been traveling across U.S and Europe for a while and my most recent trip was Las Vegas. I heard from many people that it’s a fantastic place to visit and you’ve to  visit at least once in your life time.  I was in Las Vegas for few days (after 3 days, I was getting home sick) and I enjoyed the hotels with unique themes and the place is huge. It felt like that I was on a cruise ship.

The hotels are loaded with so many things and you can do whatever you want. You shall receive if you’ve cash in your pocket.  It’s a party city and the people are having enjoyable time.  I went to various hotels in evening times to check out party and gambling scenes to get some ideas for the next grooveTEK podcast show.

Well, I got my theme for the podcast show and I came out with progressive trance mix. I’ve spent several hours to mix the session and it was very painful process (believe me, you don’t want to know about it).  Come on grooveTEK electronica music followers just grab your headphones and MP3 players and enjoy the Dirty Vegas Mix.

Groove Armada are a electronic music group from Cambridge, England, composed of two members, Andy Cato (real name Andrew Cocup) and Tom Findlay.

They first came to fame with a 1997 limited single release, “At The River”, which sampled “Old Cape Cod” by Patti Page. The song has since been found on numerous chill out compilations.

One of their most popular works is their 2000 international hit “I See You Baby”, remixed by Fatboy Slim in the Big Beat style, with the repeated chorus line “I see you baby….Shakin’ that ass”, as heard in Renault Mégane advertisements.

Vocals were provided by Ibiza-based DJ Gram’Ma Funk. Incidentally, this track was also recorded with the chorus line “Shakin’ that thang” for various conservative markets around the world, most notably the American South.

In addition, some of their other tracks are often featured in television adverts or television promos including “If Everybody Looked The Same” in the 2001 Mercedez-Benz advert.

Their song “Hands of Time”, starring folksinger Richie Havens, is featured in the movie Collateral, and is referred to by one of the characters as a “classic song.”

Another song, “Edge Hill” is featured in the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and has been used on Channel 4 promotional adverts for the hit series Lost. “Madder” is featured in the video game Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc as the game introduction.

The Decade of Defected.

San. Dra (Alexandra Kartisheva) was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, to a musical family, a family of professional musicians. Her parents wanted her to become a great classical pianist, but she had another path in mind. She loved the electronic music that was emerging at the time. When she was around ten years old, she remembers watching videos of “The Prodigy” in amazement, thinking, “How do they create such music? “

Later, a classmate brought in a drum’n'bass CD for her to listen to. She loved the broken rhythms. In May of 2007, she released her first professional track. It was played by dj Gvozd on “Radio Record” (Russia) in December that same year. The Russian drum’n'bass crew (mostly “Respect Family“) have supported and mentored Alex, giving her a powerful stimulus for her musical development.

Music labels, Subtle Audio,  Respect and Opposide are interested in her music and have signed her. And San.Dra is supported by Loxy, Stranjah, Paul T,  0=0, Fracture & Neptune, Dissident, Electosoul System, Gvozd, Unquote and many other great artists.

Their goal is to make a unique ambient drum’n'bass sound with lots of percussions (leftfield drum’n'bass) to make people think,  a sort of meditation. First of all it’s music for the soul, and only then is it music for dancing. Alex creates music to focus people’s attention on the cultures of the east, meditation practices and consciousness enlightenment.

From the 8th to the 11th of October 2009, Netaudio Berlin will be gathering the international netaudio community for a four-day music and conference festival in Berlin, under the title “East meets West”. 2009 will mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. We recall pictures of hands reaching out to pull people from both sides up onto the Berlin wall. The event will take place at Maria, a venue situated immediately on the former Berlin ‘death strip’ once dividing the city and the world into eastern and western hemispheres.

In recent years a netaudio landscape has emerged in the countries of Eastern Europe. Speakers, artists and netlabel managers from Eastern and Western Europe as well as from the USA are invited to find out more about the needs and possibilities, challenges and chances of netaudio under the various cultural frameworks and to discuss new opportunities for networking and collaboration across borders and cultures.

The musical focus lies on a selection of Berlin’ finest electronic music, namely, House, Techno and Minimal. However, many artists from the fields of Ambient, Noise, Dub, Drum’n’Bass, Pop, Triphop, Dubstep, Breakbeats, Drone, Hip Hop and Techdub will add to the varied musical program. Although the netaudio scene consists of artists mostly unknown to the broader public, many names have already earned international recognition. This is reflected in the lineup of the evenings programme, crowned by such illustrious figures as Pheek, D. Diggler, Erich Lesovsky, Marc Schneider, Goldwill, Tanith, Stereoshape, SCSI-9, Disrupt, Holger Flinsch, Marko Fürstenberg, and the Kraftfuttermischwerk. With over 100 participating artists spread over 3 nights, the netaudio festival gives a comprehensive insight into the various musical genres and brings netaudio music to life for participants and visitors. The day program includes numerous workshops and discussions with top experts as well as a film program, showcases, netaudio fair, and various contributions from other art forms.

The Berliner Crew has benefited from their experience during the previous Berlin Festival in 2007 and from their involvement with international partners in London, Moscow, Barcelona and Bologna. In addition to their ambition to further develop the netaudio scene worldwide, the organizers also hope to strengthen the position of Berlin as a hub between East and West, by integrating various netlabels from all parts of Europe. The organizers are sending a signal of exclamation to the netaudio community, especially in the countries of Eastern Europe that this will be the largest, most diverse and simply the most exciting Netaudio Festival of all time!

It’s 9:45 AM; I’m at Pete Coffee Shop at Harvard Square and having a HOT Latte. This is kind a down time for me and I wanted to complete an overdue task which was given to me by Buddhaboy. You’ve been visiting grooveTEK.net site over couple of days and I’m sure that you’ve noticed that a great musician Sraunus on our featured section. So, I wanted to start a quick write up on Sraunus and promote him since he got my attention with his Depot 2 track and complimented with a cool video.

The man behind Sraunus is Paulius Markutis from Lithuania. It’s was challenging for me to collect info on Paulius from the .NET since there are limited info on him. I believe that he likes to stay low profile as much as possible and I don’t blame him. Internet is huge NOISE/DISTRACTION box. Anyway, Depot track has good drum beats, good baseline, love the harmonic sounds and track has good kicks and breakdowns .

Overall, it’s a brilliant electronica music track and it will be on my iTunes Library by end of the day. I love the track every time when play it in the morning and it gives me a great deal of boost before I go to my real job.

Paul Van Dyk has released a new video for the single “Home,” which appears on VOLUME and is now ranking at the top #1 spot on the U.K. Club Charts. Directed by Dennis White (aka Static Revenger), the piece features van Dyk in the place he is most at home—onstage performing for thousands of adoring fans. Also featured in the video is the song’s vocalist Johnny McDaid of Vega 4 who, along with Paul van Dyk, is creatively edited into frames of Polaroid snapshots.

In other PVD news, Paul Van Dyk has announced his return to New York City to ring in the New Year. The US inflated the $700,000 bill for damages it slapped on UFO hacker Gary McKinnon by stuffing it with costs incurred for patching the gaping holes the hacker had exposed in its computer security, according to a document filed with the Supreme Court.The US had not taken reasonable steps to protect its security and now expects McKinnon to pick up the bill, said an expert witness statement made in McKinnons ongoing appeal against a US extradition order.Peter Sommer, professor of security at the London School of Economics, said damage assessments of computer security breaches should consider “whether the victims have taken reasonable steps to limit the damage”.McKinnon had used Remotely Anywhere, a software tool, to hack US military computers in search of UFO secrets.

From the 8th to the 11th of October 2009, Netaudio Berlin will be gathering the international netaudio community for a four-day music and conference festival in Berlin, under the title “East meets West”. 2009 will mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. We recall pictures of hands reaching out to pull people from both sides up onto the Berlin wall. The event will take place at Maria, a venue situated immediately on the former Berlin ‘death strip’ once dividing the city and the world into eastern and western hemispheres.

In recent years a netaudio landscape has emerged in the countries of Eastern Europe. Speakers, artists and netlabel managers from Eastern and Western Europe as well as from the USA are invited to find out more about the needs and possibilities, challenges and chances of netaudio under the various cultural frameworks and to discuss new opportunities for networking and collaboration across borders and cultures.

The musical focus lies on a selection of Berlin’ finest electronic music, namely, House, Techno and Minimal. However, many artists from the fields of Ambient, Noise, Dub, Drum’n’Bass, Pop, Triphop, Dubstep, Breakbeats, Drone, Hip Hop and Techdub will add to the varied musical program. Although the netaudio scene consists of artists mostly unknown to the broader public, many names have already earned international recognition. Chinese Scientists Record 40 Minutes of Clear UFO Footage

According to Chinese TV, Chinese scientists at the Purple Mountain Observatory in Nanjing are claiming that they have recorded clear UFO footage while observing total solar eclipse on July 22. Observatory director Ji Hai-sheng says they need to study it:

Purple Mountain Observatory and Chinese Academy of Sciences said that during the July 22 total solar eclipse observation, China had discovered near the sun, by observing staff, an unidentified object, it’s physical nature remains to be further studied. Currently manpower is being organized to deal with this data, complete the data analysis and reveal the scientific results and this will take at least one year’s time to finalize.

According to Chinese television, students captured the phenomenon with their cameras—the video and frames shown in this article—claiming that the object appeared as a “glowing blue sphere,” and then changed its shape repeatedly.

We will have to wait until the Purple Mountain Observatory releases the actual video, as well as their conclusions. Until then, I am going to go with the standard a) venus lights, b) morning gas, c) dim-sum advertising blimp, d) all of the above. [Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail]

The ‘background music’ stigma has been a difficult cross to bear for Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland.

The term implies all that pop music shouldn’t be: generic, dull, meant to go unnoticed. In fact, it’s possibly the worst thing you could say to a musician. At least Linkin Park get noticed? Even if they are bloody awful.

Röyksopp - Senior Citizens

Some might say that Röyksopp have brought the label on themselves, though, by letting they’re music be used as the background to a number of adverts and other commercial opportunities. It’s an argument the Norwegian pair are justifiably riled by. We’ll go in to that later.

When Röyksopp headline The Xfm Stage at Clapham Common’s Get Loaded In The Park Festival later this month, they’ll be anything but in the background. Playing songs from recent album Junior (which many have seen as a conscious effort to escape the elevator music stamp), I wonder how the duo intend to tackle the age old problem of making electronic music a suitably captivating spectacle for a festival stage?

“That has been the catch, if you will, for years with this kind of music,” says a wordy and – I’m soon to discover – rather philosophical Svein Berge from a hotel in Bern, Switzerland. Explaining that Röyksopp aren’t yet quite in the league of Jean Michel Jarre (“we can’t afford to have people playing saxophone from space – we are saving that for later”), the Norwegian tells me Röyksopp try to replicate the rock band format for big live shows as much as possible, rather than compensating for the ‘two men hiding behind laptop’ line-up with grandiose visuals.

“We try and make our live experience to be all about the music, but then also about having fun. We want it to be as if you were attending a rock concert. We have a bass player and me and Torbjørn also play as much as we possibly can live.

“Obviously there is stuff with our music that has to be done with a sequencer or a computer because of the way we have programmed that bit of the song. People might say ‘why isn’t the drummer playing the drums?’ and we would say ‘well, because a drummer cannot play as tight as we have programmed it’, and also the sound of acoustic drums are different to the sounds that we prefer to have; so we do have a sequencer running for some of the things that are too intricate to be played live.

“Torbjørn and also I play keyboards, do a bit of percussion, a bit of singing and we also have two live vocalists and a guy playing strings.

“We have to balance it though. We don’t want to just become something else and loose all of the identify that we feel we have in our sound – our sonic soundscapes. If we swap all of our analogue synthesisers for guitars and banjos it won’t be Röyksopp anymore.”

So then, what is Röyksopp? Weirdly, there’s a feeling about their latest release that makes you wonder if the band had become uncomfortable with how people were beginning to perceive them. Junior is a much more punchy album than the subtler, more introspective affair that was 2005’s The Understanding. Much heavier on vocals (a range of different guest singers that included the Swedish pop singer, Robyn, were brought in), it’s generally more bouncy, catchier and more accessible than anything that’s gone before. People danced in elevators everywhere?

Berge tells me that each Royksopp album represents the way the band were feeling at the time – a stage in their life and creative journey. And that accompanying Junior will be a second release, Senior, at the end of the year, which will be a more withdrawn, ambient counterpart to the more energetic, Junior – so the band couldn’t truly be said to be reacting directly to ‘background music’ criticism.

“I think that the music we make is pretty much a document of how we feel at that particular time in our lives,” says Berge. “I think it is quite evident – at least in retrospect – that when we made our first record, Melody A.M., we were very poor and skinny and living off rice and potatoes.

“Perhaps this meant there was a higher level of freedom and curiosity and also some sort of search in trying to find a musical identity – we wanted to make something that stood out and sounded unique – and I think on that album you can hear that it is playful and we haven’t quite found our own thing. I think we were trying to stretch something in so many different directions.

“On The Understanding I think we were confused and bewildered about the role that we had now been given and the expectation of what we were to do now – that whole difficult second album thing. When we made Melody A.M. no one knew who we were, where as after that million selling album it was harder to get

cracking on the next one. We also hadn’t fully taken in the change in our lives. We were being recognised, etc and in the public eye. There was a lot of searching and not quite knowing where we were.”

Just as Berge sees The Understanding as a reaction to the popularity of Röyksopp’s first release, he says that Junior – with its confident use of more energetic and accessible dance beats – was a result of having toured so much. Having been on the road playing and being in so many clubs, the band found themselves returning to their house music roots and produced their third album as a result.

The creation of Senior to go alongside Junior was Röyksopp at their happiest and most financially secure. Berge says the simultaneous creation of the two albums was the most comfortable and easiest project that Röyksopp have ever been involved with – a mark of a band who truly understood where they were in their lives.

So then, being happy with exactly where they are at this moment in time, what of that niggling question? The reason that Röyksopp have attracted some doubters over the years? Why all the adverts?

“I think it about 2000 when we broke through,” says Berge. “We were two Norwegian guys. It was hard. We were mainly into instrumental, electronic music so it was difficult to break through – especially difficult getting air play on radio. As far as I am concerned the business of getting air play is equally dodgy or as dubious as using your music in ads – that’s my take.

“We thought at that point we’d find that one advert in the UK; one company that would be willing to use our music just to get it out there and create a buzz. We chose to use a track called ‘So Easy’ and it was a song where we had sampled a song by Burt Bacharach. We made no money on that song. He probably made enough to buy a new piano and a new tan and colour his hair even greyer. We just wanted to show that we were not doing it for the money, that we were doing it as a long term plan to get noticed. At that point we felt it was okay. I know it was frowned upon but we felt we could justify it in some ways. We have turned down lots of ads since then.”

So then. Röyksopp plus adverts equals Burt Bacharach more tanned and more grey. That’s a nice place to leave it I think?

The nation’s cellphone networks could suffer “potentially catastrophic” cyberattacks by iPhone-wielding hackers at home and abroad if iPhone owners are permitted to legally jailbreak their shiny wireless devices — that’s what Apple claims.  A jailbroken iPhone is a weapon of mass disruption, Apple claims.

The Copyright Office is considering a request by the Electronic Frontier Foundation to legalize the widespread practice of jailbreaking, in which iPhone owners hack their devices to accept software that hasn’t been approved for distribution through the iPhone App Store. Apple made the claim in comments filed last week (.pdf) with the agency.

The company’s filing explained that jailbreaking could allow hackers to altering the iPhone’s BBP — the “baseband processor” software, which enables a connection to cell phone towers.

By tinkering with this code, “a local or international hacker could potentially initiate commands (such as a denial of service attack) that could crash the tower software, rendering the tower entirely inoperable to process calls or transmit data,” Apple wrote the government. “Taking control of the BBP software would be much the equivalent of getting inside the firewall of a corporate computer — to potentially catastrophic result.

“The technological protection measures were designed into the iPhone precisely to prevent these kinds of pernicious activities, and if granted, the jailbreaking exemption would open the door to them,” Apple added.

Computerworld – Lime Group Chairman Mark Gorton found himself in the hot seat last week during a hearing on the problem of inadvertent data leaks on peer-to-peer (P2P) networks including his company’s, LimeWire. The hearing was held by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Furious lawmakers blasted Gorton over what they claimed was his company’s continued failure to ensure that users of LimeWire software did not share files inadvertently. The scathing criticism came in the wake of testimony by two witnesses at the hearing. Robert Boback, CEO of Tiversa Inc., a P2P networking monitoring service, disclosed how he had discovered highly sensitive government data, ncluding presidential motorcade routes, on LimeWire networks.

The other witness was Progress and Freedom Foundation’s Thomas Sydnor, who said his experiments with LimeWire’s P2P software had revealed it to be extremely susceptible to inadvertent file sharing. The disclosures led to committee chairman Edolphus Towns (D-NY) saying he would soon introduce a bill seeking to ban the use of P2P software on government networks.

In a conversation with Computerworld, Gorton flatly rejected some of the testimony. He claimed that concerns about data leaks on P2P networks are being fueled and orchestrated by music labels concerned more about copyright infringement on P2P networks than anything else.

It’s a very quite Sunday, July 5, 2009 and my local town feels like a ghost town where majority of the Bostonian escaped city life headed down to the south shore. That means that there will be less crowds in Starbucks. So, I’m here at Starbuck for next two hours so turned ON my laptop and this is what I’m seeing again.

Yet another DejaVu moment where I faced last month at same place and time. I couldn’t find no power source near me and most of power outlet used by other people. I’m not the only one faced with laptop power issues. we all got hit once or twice.

Tech gear person like you and I, what can we so about it?

1. Be a bully in Starbucks by just unplugging someone’s power plug and plug your one in (how is your Karata?).
2. Just be patient and wait someone to leave.
3. Charge your laptop batter every night.
4. Search for Alternative solution.
5. All above.

The correct answer is 4 and it’s choice which we were seeking for long time. How many times you faced with no power to watch movies or working on work related document on a long flight? We all agree that it’s a great feeling for a mobile person to have the power to compute from anywhere at anytime. The good news is that solution to our problem has arrived after many years well at least for Apple Mac users.
