Jim was a Llewellyn setter born of pureblood champion field stock in Louisiana. Though his litter mates were selling for $25 each, a goodly sum in 1925, he was considered the most unlikely of the litter and came into Sam VanArsdale’s hands for less than half that amount. Attempts to train Jim for the field seemed futile as he lay in the shade watching while the trainer worked with the three other dogs. However, when taken to the field that fall for the first time, he immediately went to a covey of quail, came up on perfect point, held steady until the quail was shot, and immediately brought the bird to Mr. VanArsdale on the order to “fetch”. He proved to be a marvelous hunting dog, knowing where there were quail, and refusing to hunt where there were none. His master, an avid hunter who traveled from state to state hunting, kept track of birds shot over his beloved dog. He stopped counting at 5,000, a total no other dog ever reached. Outdoor Life Magazine termed him “The Hunting Dog of the Country”.

However, Jim was much more than just a champion hunting dog since Mr. VanArsdale found, quite by accident while in the field one day, that his dog could understand what he was saying to him and carried out his commands. It was a hot day, and Mr. VanArsdale said, “Let’s go over and rest a bit under that Hickory tree”. Although in a woods of numerous kinds of trees, he went to the Hickory. Surprised by this, he asked Jim to go to a Walnut, then a Cedar, a stump, and a tin can, which he did rapidly and perfectly.

This was the start of the amazing things the dog did on command. When told to do so, he could go out on the street and locate a car by make, color, out-of-state, or a license number. From a crowd he could select the “man who sells hardware”, and the one who “takes care of sick people”, or the “visitor from Kansas City”.

He carried out instructions given to him in any foreign language, shorthand, or Morse Code. He was capable of predicting the outcome of future events. He chose the winner of seven Kentucky Derbies, The World Series of baseball and the sex of unborn babies.

Mr. VanArsdale arranged for a demonstration at the University of Missouri with Dr. Durant, head veterinarian. He could find nothing physically abnormal from any other dog. He was tested by a group of college students and passed each command with flying colors.

In 1935 Jim performed at the Kemmerer Hotel in Kemmerer, Wyoming. After his successful perfomance, an article was written in the Gazette of Kemmerer on Friday, August 30, 1935, telling of this performance and referring to Jim as “The Wonder Dog”.

Jim also performed before the Missouri Legislature and at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia. Newspaper and magazine writers came to witness Jim and were stunned. They wrote of incredulous things they saw and Jim’s fame spread across the United States and elsewhere. He was featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

He is buried in Marshall’s Ridge Park Cemetery with a grave stone and is probably the only animal in a people cemetery. Caretakers say his is the most visited grave there and is seldom without flowers and coins left on it. The site of the Jim The Wonder Dog Garden off the northwest corner of the Square is the place once occupied by the Ruff Hotel where Jim lived with his owner Sam VanArsdale, the hotel manager. This is Marshall’s way of commemorating one of it’s most famous “citizens”.

Shosone Indians:

The historic Shoshone Indians, of the Uto-Aztecan linguistic stock, occupied territory in California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming, although most of them seemed to be settled in the Snake river area in Idaho.Historical documents from the Lewis & Clark expedition often refer to the Shoshone as the “Snake Indians”; the actual name “Shoshone” means “The Valley People” . The name means “inland”, or “in the valley”.The Shoshone were few in numbers, their total population being somewhere in the area of 8000.
In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant established a 100 square mile executive order reservation for the Lemhi Valley Shoshone, establishing the Lemhi Valley Indian Reservation for use by the Shoshone, Bannock, and Sheepeater tribes.

In 1905, nearly one hundred years after their first contact with the white man, the Lemhi Shoshone began their “Trail of Tears”, being forcibly removed from their ancestral homelands to the Fort Hall Indian Reservationto their newly “appointed” home.

An article by Professor Orlan J. Svingen of the History Department at Washington State University brings forth several injustices suffered by the Lemhi Shoshone.Prof. Svingen writes:
“But perhaps the ultimate act of dispossession was the Indian Claims Commission settlement involving the Lemhi people. During the 1960s, the ICC and the federal government determined that the Lemhi Claim to aboriginal lands would have to be submitted as part of the larger Shoshone-Bannock Claim. The Lemhis were prohibited from filing their own independent claim. When their claim, Docket #326-1, came before the ICC, the Lemhi claim to their land 200 miles north of Fort Hall totaled $4.5 million. Based on pressure from the federal government, the ICC, the Sho-Bans, and the Sho-Bans attorneys, the $4.5 million was assigned to the Shoshone Bannock general fund. Rather than dividing the 1971 Lemhi settlement among the approximately 500 Lemhis living at Fort Hall, it was, essentially, divided among as many as 3000 people living at Fort Hall–the overwhelming majority of whom had no direct or indirect tie to Lemhi lands.20 Opposition to the settlement was widespread among the Lemhi, but their dissatisfaction fell on the deaf ears of the Shoshone-Bannock majority and the Sho-Ban attorneys from the firm of Wilkinson, Cragun & Barker. Udale Simmer Tendoy, a Lemhi descendant, typified Lemhi opposition with his assessment of the ICC decision in 1971.”

Today, the Shoshone are still waiting to become a Federally recognized tribe, along with over 200 other Native American tribes such as the California Chumash and the North-Eastern Abenakis.There has been much controversy surrounding the U.S. Government’s plans to commemorate the bicentennial of the Lewis & Clark expedition.
Prof. Svingen comments on the proposed bicentennial celebration:
“…as the nation prepares to celebrate the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, it is difficult to consider how the country can celebrate the Corps of Discovery while such a debt to Sacajawea and her people remains such a scandal.”

The Reel Festival (formally the Reel Movement) will take place from May 28th to June 1st at the Somerville Theater, 55 Davis Square, Somerville, MA. The festival, organized by filmmakers Rod Webber, Ali Jalet and David Grophear, is a quarterly independent film showcase, featuring all genres, lengths and styles of films.

According to Webber, “The Reel Festival is a collaborative of like-minded individuals who share more than a dream. They share a mission. Our goal is to create a seed-bed for films which personify innovation, individuality and daring strokes of bold new cinema.

“Boston is known for its history and its wealth of universities and artists, but it has also got a vibrant filmmaking community, which has seen an explosion in the past couple of years, with the passing of tax incentives.” said Webber. “Being the birthplace of the American Revolution, it is no surprise that it has given birth to a new revolution in film.”

Webber said it is in that spirit that the festival organizers “hope to achieve a place for film that embodies individuality and expressiveness. Films that challenge and explore.” The festival’s formula is to headline a feature film, along with several dozen shorts. The last Reel Festival featured Webber’s controversial documentary A Man Among Giants and garnered attention from both the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe.

Webber, about whom the Boston Globe wrote, “the [director] to watch,” will be featuring his experimental film Northern Comfort, starring Webber and Greta Gerwig (Greenberg, Friends with Benefits), The film, shot in three days, is described as an existentialist character-study, in which Webber and Gerwig encounter a slice of snowy, northern Americana as they walk, talk, and drive their way to Canada for employment and health-care, respectively.

The main characters, Horace (Webber) and Cassandra (Gerwig), meet while traveling to Canada. Guided only by a set of books-on-tape of Greek philosopher Socrates, and bound together by circumstance, the mismatched duo must learn to work together or meander aimlessly throughout the frozen wilderness. When Cassandra is confronted with the reality that her sickness is worsening, she must decide whether to stick it out with Horace, or find her own way, knowing that her time is running out.

The Reel Festival is still accepting shorts of any genre for this month’s festival. Webber said they are also looking for features for the August/September showcase. Nilow is a Dubstep/Drum n Bass Dj and Producer from Berlin/Germany… in the age of 17 he start playing Bass in some Garage Bands with Punk and Hardcore..Furthermore he tryed to play Drums. One time he get his first musik program and start to make beats and try make his first tracks. What Nilow Love is the sounds of deep and massive Basses..
In the year 2000 he came in contact with Drum n Bass.. and at the first moment he loved this massive sounds and starting to search for more music with deep and dirty basslines until he came in contact with DUBSTEP, and in 2007 he started to spin Turntables and make his first own productions..
After running a monthly Drum n Bass Party called BassFiber in Berlin he and his mate Barry T. decided to found her own label BF-Recordings it is a mixed DUbstep and Drum n Bass label and started in the beginnin of 2009. The Sound from Nilow is experimental – a mix of melodic strings and heavy Basslines. He Produce many kinds of Dubstep. Now he have some Releases on Bf-Rec, Barish-Rec, Assimilation Dub Rec, and Imperative Rec. He also have a new and upcomin projekt with Panika a producer girl from Poland this projekt started in the middle of 2009 – they wanted make one track together just for fun – but they get so much good feedback that they make a next.. and now it is a new Dubstep Projekt and they try to make experimental Dubstep where evey tune tell his own story ..
One of my next projects is a Drum n Bass project under the name Moestep.. here he produce only Drum n Bass .. because he say he is addicted in BASS…

The Sheep EP isn’t a real EP, it’s more an album. It’s sort of the pre-work of “God”, I began working on God a couple month after release of Sheep. So the style is pretty much God. When you love God you love (his) Sheep.

Telharmonium

“Telharmonium” was the strange-sounding name given to one of the earliest electrical musical instruments by its inventor, whose Thaddeus Cahill. The Iowa-born Cahill was a lawyer and sometime inventor, born in 1867. As a youth he enjoyed experimenting with telephones and other gadgets.

By the 1890s, Cahill was fascinated by the prospect of creating a new kind of musical instrument, one that would surpass what he saw as the limitations of all existing types, such as the limited range of notes they could play. In the early 1890s he developed the idea of using small alternating-current generators to generate electric waves at various frequencies. These would be controlled by a keyboard and heard through a telephone receiver. The final design, patented in 1897, had twelve separate generators, which produced the twelve basic tones of the musical scale. Each of these generators (called dynamos in those days) consisted of a motor-driven shaft, packed with a series of “rheotomes” or notched discs. The discs interacted with wire “field” coils to generate an alternating current (by the process of induction). The number of notches in the disc determined the frequency of the current. By operating each dynamo at a precise speed, each disc would produce a current that could be heard as a sound in a telephone receiver. The different tones could be switched on and off in any combination through a piano-like keyboard.

By 1901, Cahill had constructed a working model, and he began seeking financial backing to create a finished machine. With it, he said, he would provide musical concerts that would be delivered over telephone wires to restaurants, bar rooms, or people’s homes. The final model, which employed 145 separate electric generators, was completed in 1906. Weighing in at 200 tons, the giant instrument was 60 feet long, had multiple keyboards and controls, and required at least two players. Cahill made two more Telharmoniums, finishing the last of them in 1911. The last Telharmonium, an even larger system, was installed in a special performance room in New York City from which Cahill and his investors planned to offer Telharmonium music concerts to hotels in the area for a fee. Unfortunately, the instrument interfered with telephone service in the area, aggravating local residents. It was played periodically through about the time of World War I, when it was finally dismantled. No recordings of Telharmonium music are known to exist, and no Telharmonium survived after about 1920. from Telharmonium – GHN

Koop is an electronic jazz duo from Sweden, consisting of Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson.
Koop won a Swedish Grammy Award in 2003, and received a Gold certification for sales of their most recent album, Koop Islands. Their acclaimed, orchestrated sound is achieved by slowly putting together thousands of small clips from records until the songs are ready, which helps explain the long time it takes to make a Koop album. Vocals have been provided by singers such as Cecilia Stalin, Ane Brun, Yukimi Nagano, Hilde Louise Asbjornsen, Rob Gallagher and Mikael Sundin.

The band shot to prominence when the song ‘Strange Love’ from the album ‘Waltz for Koop’ was featured in a commercial for Coca Cola.

Happy New Year – 2010

Okay people, I’m back from Saint Maarten after a short one week trip. I’ve learned to slow down my life and make my daily life to be more of a harmonic pattern rather than random.

Before, I left for Saint Maarten about 20 DJs submitted their LIVE sets to me for first podcast for year 2010. I’ve not listened all 20 LIVE sets but I’ve randomly picked 5 LIVE sets and I’ve made my selection for the  podcast.
