Its been a fantastic year since we’ve restarted grooveTEK electronica music. “Thank You” to all the excellent artists that participated in making this self promotional blog a success.

We’ve recently decided to go back to  moonbase alpha as well as our old bimonthly podcast only format. Of course we are still looking for great mixes from others for the podcast, so continue to send them along. All future podcasts will still be posted here and on ITunes.

We are independent artists and filmmakers ourselves and we know the time and effort it takes to produce a painting, song, photograph, film, dj mix, poem, book and …

The Net has provided us a way to share our work and the work of others, providing you with alternatives. This experimental site and project is totally self-funded and the artists presented here share their work with you freely.

A site dedicated in the presentation of quality cinematic events in Cyprus. The site functions as a hosting platform for all major film festivals that take place in Cyprus throughout the year.

The next festival that is being organized is “Cyprus Film Days”. “Cyprus Film Days” is the most celebrated annual international Film Festival that takes place in Cyprus. It is organized by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the RIALTO theatre. The 8^th edition of the festival will take place between the 10^th and the 18^th of April in Limassol at the RIALTO Theatre and in Nicosia at the PANTHEON Art Cinema. Continuing the tradition of previous years, the festival will host some of the best and most important films of the year that have been critically acclaimed internationally.

The main objective of the festival is the screening and promotion of independent cinema that deals with contemporary social and political issues across the globe. This year’s program is a selective combination of films that have been distinguished and received awards at numerous international festivals, groundbreaking films as well as low budget productions which are cinematic discoveries in terms of their artistic and narrative approach.

Who is Tony Maserati?

Tony Maserati is a record producer and studio engineer who has worked with many mainstream artist of the 1990s and 2000’s including James Brown, Mariah Carey, Destiny’s Child, R. Kelly, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Puff Daddy, and Tupac.^[1]

Its been an amazing six months since we’ve reactivated. We intended focusing primarily on our podcast and film work but were quickly swept away by all the excellent music being produced by so many independents worldwide. You know how it is.

Well, it’s been our pleasure to host, just a sample, of this music. Hopefully others will discover what we have.

Morpheus is back from St. Marten (wishing he wasn’t) cooking up some mixes for next year and I’m sitting here in my studio trying to figure out what’s next – nothing new… Next year our focus will be more on creating and less on posting.

The Decade of Defected.

The days of complaints in triplicate, airline delaying tactics and premium-rate customer call centres are over. If you want compensation for your damaged luggage, you just need to write a song.

Dave Carroll spent nine months trying to win compensation when his guitar was broken during a flight between Chicago and Nebraska last spring. He eventually accepted that he would get no payment from United Airlines, so he took the battle online.

With his band Sons of Maxwell, Carroll wrote a catchy, folksy tune called “United Breaks Guitars”. Then he recorded a video featuring callous baggage handlers maiming instruments and posted it on YouTube.

“I should have flown with someone else, or gone by car, because United breaks guitars,” he croons while perched on a suitcase on a runway.

From the 8th to the 11th of October 2009, Netaudio Berlin will be gathering the international netaudio community for a four-day music and conference festival in Berlin, under the title “East meets West”. 2009 will mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. We recall pictures of hands reaching out to pull people from both sides up onto the Berlin wall. The event will take place at Maria, a venue situated immediately on the former Berlin ‘death strip’ once dividing the city and the world into eastern and western hemispheres.

In recent years a netaudio landscape has emerged in the countries of Eastern Europe. Speakers, artists and netlabel managers from Eastern and Western Europe as well as from the USA are invited to find out more about the needs and possibilities, challenges and chances of netaudio under the various cultural frameworks and to discuss new opportunities for networking and collaboration across borders and cultures.

The musical focus lies on a selection of Berlin’ finest electronic music, namely, House, Techno and Minimal. However, many artists from the fields of Ambient, Noise, Dub, Drum’n’Bass, Pop, Triphop, Dubstep, Breakbeats, Drone, Hip Hop and Techdub will add to the varied musical program. Although the netaudio scene consists of artists mostly unknown to the broader public, many names have already earned international recognition. This is reflected in the lineup of the evenings programme, crowned by such illustrious figures as Pheek, D. Diggler, Erich Lesovsky, Marc Schneider, Goldwill, Tanith, Stereoshape, SCSI-9, Disrupt, Holger Flinsch, Marko Fürstenberg, and the Kraftfuttermischwerk. With over 100 participating artists spread over 3 nights, the netaudio festival gives a comprehensive insight into the various musical genres and brings netaudio music to life for participants and visitors. The day program includes numerous workshops and discussions with top experts as well as a film program, showcases, netaudio fair, and various contributions from other art forms.

The Berliner Crew has benefited from their experience during the previous Berlin Festival in 2007 and from their involvement with international partners in London, Moscow, Barcelona and Bologna. In addition to their ambition to further develop the netaudio scene worldwide, the organizers also hope to strengthen the position of Berlin as a hub between East and West, by integrating various netlabels from all parts of Europe. The organizers are sending a signal of exclamation to the netaudio community, especially in the countries of Eastern Europe that this will be the largest, most diverse and simply the most exciting Netaudio Festival of all time!

Last year, at a conference for music creators, an independent artist – and the producer she runs a label with – both stood up to talk about the difficulties they had surviving in an environment where people got their music for free from illegal filesharing sites. Afterwards, I contacted her to ask if she’d be up for discussing the issue further in the behind the music blog. She replied: “I want to stay clear of talking too much about finances, as I think it’s vulgar for artists to talk about money and business!” In other words, she was happy to talk about it, just not in public.

For years, illegal filesharing has been portrayed as an issue between the major labels and the music fans, with the odd quote from some mega-star. Naturally, most people would side with the “little man” as opposed to the big corporations. Meanwhile, artists were too weary of saying anything for fear of appearing regressive, greedy (vulgar?) or alienating fans.

Black Francis, Kim Deal and the rest of the Pixies will be hanging around Denver for a second show, it was announced today. The Pixies will now play the Fillmore Auditorium on both Monday, Nov. 16, and Tuesday, Nov. 17. Doors @ 7 p.m.; shows at 8 p.m.

The tour is is celebration of the 20th anniversary of the release of their classic 1989 album “Doolittle.” The U.S. tour will hit a total of nine cities, including three dates in New York.

On this tour, the Pixies will perform all of the songs from “Doolittle” and its related B-sides, “Weird at My School,” “Dancing the Manta Ray” and “Bailey’s Walk,” among them. Doolittle, the band’s third album and the first to chart on Billboard’s album charts, includes classics such as “Debaser,” “Wave of Mutilation,” “Here Comes Your Man,” “Hey” and “Gouge Away.”

“We wanted to do something special for “Doolittle’s” 20th anniversary,” said Black Francis, “and we thought his was a good opportunity to play all of the songs from that album, something we don’t normally do at a regular gig.”

The international tour kicks off on Sept. 30 in Dublin. A four-night stand at London’s 20,000-seat Brixton Academy is already sold out.

Speakers, artists and netlabel managers from Eastern and Western Europe as well as from the USA are invited to find out more about the needs and possibilities, challenges and chances of netaudio under the various cultural frameworks and to discuss new opportunities for networking and collaboration across borders and cultures.

The musical focus lies on a selection of Berlin’ finest electronic music, namely, House, Techno and Minimal. However, many artists from the fields of Ambient, Noise, Dub, Drum’n’Bass, Pop, Triphop, Dubstep, Breakbeats, Drone, Hip Hop and Techdub will add to the varied musical program. Although the netaudio scene consists of artists mostly unknown to the broader public, many names have already earned international recognition. This is reflected in the lineup of the evenings programme, crowned by such illustrious figures as Pheek, D. Diggler, Erich Lesovsky, Marc Schneider, Goldwill, Tanith, Stereoshape, SCSI-9, Disrupt, Holger Flinsch, Marko Fürstenberg, and the Kraftfuttermischwerk. With over 100 participating artists spread over 3 nights, the netaudio festival gives a comprehensive insight into the various musical genres and brings netaudio music to life for participants and visitors. The day program includes numerous workshops and discussions with top experts as well as a film program, showcases, netaudio fair, and various contributions from other art forms.

The Berliner Crew has benefited from their experience during the previous Berlin Festival in 2007 and from their involvement with international partners in London, Moscow, Barcelona and Bologna. In addition to their ambition to further develop the netaudio scene worldwide, the organizers also hope to strengthen the position of Berlin as a hub between East and West, by integrating various netlabels from all parts of Europe. The organizers are sending a signal of exclamation to the netaudio community, especially in the countries of Eastern Europe that this will be the largest, most diverse and simply the most exciting Netaudio Festival of all time!

The ongoing credit crisis has hit independent film companies quite hard, as 59 such companies have wrapped up in past 18 months, while others are struggling for funds.

According to the report released by PricewaterhouseCoopers, indie companies such as Lucky 7, which made film Modigliani about the life of the Italian artist and Palm Tree UK, behind feature films Lost in Landscape and Winter Warrior, have gone bust.

The company Stormrider Films, which had scheduled to bring out “a British sci-fi feature film like no other ever produced in the UK” with CGI effects, called Kaleidoscope Man, has also gone bankrupt. Christian Colson, producer of Slumdog Millionaire, fears that the trend might ultimately leave Britain drained of creativity

“It will be easier to get a 100m dollars film made than a really good 15m-dollar film,” The Independent quoted him as saying.  John Woodward, chief executive of the UK Film Council, admitted that independent film companies “are facing something of a perfect storm”.

Chinese Scientists Record 40 Minutes of Clear UFO Footage

According to Chinese TV, Chinese scientists at the Purple Mountain Observatory in Nanjing are claiming that they have recorded clear UFO footage while observing total solar eclipse on July 22. Observatory director Ji Hai-sheng says they need to study it:

Purple Mountain Observatory and Chinese Academy of Sciences said that during the July 22 total solar eclipse observation, China had discovered near the sun, by observing staff, an unidentified object, it’s physical nature remains to be further studied. Currently manpower is being organized to deal with this data, complete the data analysis and reveal the scientific results and this will take at least one year’s time to finalize.

According to Chinese television, students captured the phenomenon with their cameras—the video and frames shown in this article—claiming that the object appeared as a “glowing blue sphere,” and then changed its shape repeatedly.

We will have to wait until the Purple Mountain Observatory releases the actual video, as well as their conclusions. Until then, I am going to go with the standard a) venus lights, b) morning gas, c) dim-sum advertising blimp, d) all of the above. [Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail]

Röyksopp have come out from behind their laptops and are giving dance fans the full rock show effect, they tell Michael Wylie-Harris

The ‘background music’ stigma has been a difficult cross to bear for Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland.

The term implies all that pop music shouldn’t be: generic, dull, meant to go unnoticed. In fact, it’s possibly the worst thing you could say to a musician. At least Linkin Park get noticed? Even if they are bloody awful.

Röyksopp - Senior Citizens

Some might say that Röyksopp have brought the label on themselves, though, by letting they’re music be used as the background to a number of adverts and other commercial opportunities. It’s an argument the Norwegian pair are justifiably riled by. We’ll go in to that later.

When Röyksopp headline The Xfm Stage at Clapham Common’s Get Loaded In The Park Festival later this month, they’ll be anything but in the background. Playing songs from recent album Junior (which many have seen as a conscious effort to escape the elevator music stamp), I wonder how the duo intend to tackle the age old problem of making electronic music a suitably captivating spectacle for a festival stage?

“That has been the catch, if you will, for years with this kind of music,” says a wordy and – I’m soon to discover – rather philosophical Svein Berge from a hotel in Bern, Switzerland. Explaining that Röyksopp aren’t yet quite in the league of Jean Michel Jarre (“we can’t afford to have people playing saxophone from space – we are saving that for later”), the Norwegian tells me Röyksopp try to replicate the rock band format for big live shows as much as possible, rather than compensating for the ‘two men hiding behind laptop’ line-up with grandiose visuals.

“We try and make our live experience to be all about the music, but then also about having fun. We want it to be as if you were attending a rock concert. We have a bass player and me and Torbjørn also play as much as we possibly can live.

“Obviously there is stuff with our music that has to be done with a sequencer or a computer because of the way we have programmed that bit of the song. People might say ‘why isn’t the drummer playing the drums?’ and we would say ‘well, because a drummer cannot play as tight as we have programmed it’, and also the sound of acoustic drums are different to the sounds that we prefer to have; so we do have a sequencer running for some of the things that are too intricate to be played live.

“Torbjørn and also I play keyboards, do a bit of percussion, a bit of singing and we also have two live vocalists and a guy playing strings.

“We have to balance it though. We don’t want to just become something else and loose all of the identify that we feel we have in our sound – our sonic soundscapes. If we swap all of our analogue synthesisers for guitars and banjos it won’t be Röyksopp anymore.”

So then, what is Röyksopp? Weirdly, there’s a feeling about their latest release that makes you wonder if the band had become uncomfortable with how people were beginning to perceive them. Junior is a much more punchy album than the subtler, more introspective affair that was 2005’s The Understanding. Much heavier on vocals (a range of different guest singers that included the Swedish pop singer, Robyn, were brought in), it’s generally more bouncy, catchier and more accessible than anything that’s gone before. People danced in elevators everywhere?

Berge tells me that each Royksopp album represents the way the band were feeling at the time – a stage in their life and creative journey. And that accompanying Junior will be a second release, Senior, at the end of the year, which will be a more withdrawn, ambient counterpart to the more energetic, Junior – so the band couldn’t truly be said to be reacting directly to ‘background music’ criticism.

“I think that the music we make is pretty much a document of how we feel at that particular time in our lives,” says Berge. “I think it is quite evident – at least in retrospect – that when we made our first record, Melody A.M., we were very poor and skinny and living off rice and potatoes.

“Perhaps this meant there was a higher level of freedom and curiosity and also some sort of search in trying to find a musical identity – we wanted to make something that stood out and sounded unique – and I think on that album you can hear that it is playful and we haven’t quite found our own thing. I think we were trying to stretch something in so many different directions.

“On The Understanding I think we were confused and bewildered about the role that we had now been given and the expectation of what we were to do now – that whole difficult second album thing. When we made Melody A.M. no one knew who we were, where as after that million selling album it was harder to get

cracking on the next one. We also hadn’t fully taken in the change in our lives. We were being recognised, etc and in the public eye. There was a lot of searching and not quite knowing where we were.”

Just as Berge sees The Understanding as a reaction to the popularity of Röyksopp’s first release, he says that Junior – with its confident use of more energetic and accessible dance beats – was a result of having toured so much. Having been on the road playing and being in so many clubs, the band found themselves returning to their house music roots and produced their third album as a result.

The creation of Senior to go alongside Junior was Röyksopp at their happiest and most financially secure. Berge says the simultaneous creation of the two albums was the most comfortable and easiest project that Röyksopp have ever been involved with – a mark of a band who truly understood where they were in their lives.

So then, being happy with exactly where they are at this moment in time, what of that niggling question? The reason that Röyksopp have attracted some doubters over the years? Why all the adverts?

“I think it about 2000 when we broke through,” says Berge. “We were two Norwegian guys. It was hard. We were mainly into instrumental, electronic music so it was difficult to break through – especially difficult getting air play on radio. As far as I am concerned the business of getting air play is equally dodgy or as dubious as using your music in ads – that’s my take.

“We thought at that point we’d find that one advert in the UK; one company that would be willing to use our music just to get it out there and create a buzz. We chose to use a track called ‘So Easy’ and it was a song where we had sampled a song by Burt Bacharach. We made no money on that song. He probably made enough to buy a new piano and a new tan and colour his hair even greyer. We just wanted to show that we were not doing it for the money, that we were doing it as a long term plan to get noticed. At that point we felt it was okay. I know it was frowned upon but we felt we could justify it in some ways. We have turned down lots of ads since then.”

So then. Röyksopp plus adverts equals Burt Bacharach more tanned and more grey. That’s a nice place to leave it I think?

Les Paul (born Lester William Polsfuss on June 9, 1915 – age 92) is an American jazz guitarist and inventor. He is a pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar which “made the sound of rock and roll possible.” His many recording innovations include overdubbing, delay effects such as “sound on sound” and tape delay, phasing effects and multitrack recording. In 2003, he was named the 46th best guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine. Les Paul – Guitar Legend, Inventor Hall of Fame. His birthname was first simplified by his mother to Polfuss before he took his stage name. He had nicknames of Les Paul and Red Hot Red. He was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He first became interested in music at the age of eight, when he began playing the harmonica. After an attempt at learning to play the banjo, Paul began to play the guitar. But before he played guitar he played piano. By 13, Paul was performing semi-professionally as a country-music guitarist. At the age of 17, Paul played with Rube Tronson’s Cowboys. Soon after, he dropped out of high school to join Wolverton’s Radio Band in St. Louis, Missouri on KMOX. But his fame almost came to an end. Following a near-fatal car accident, doctors had to position his arm at a ninety degree angle so he could still play guitar.

Legendary guitarist and inventor Les Paul, who pioneered designs of electric guitars, has died of complications from pneumonia at a New York hospital, his lawyer said on Thursday. He was 94. Attorney Michael Braunstein said Paul died at the White Plains Hospital in White Plains, New York. He added that Paul had been “in and out of the hospital” for about two months and had battled a number of illnesses.

“At 94, it’s hard to fight a lot of stuff,” Braunstein said. “He’s a historical person. He certainly has left his mark here on Earth and had many, many friends.” Paul had been a dominant force in the music business since World War Two. He and wife Mary Ford enjoyed a string of hits in the 1940s and 1950s that included “Mockin’ Bird Hill” and “How High the Moon.” A passionate tinkerer, he created one of the first solid-body electric guitars in 1941, and went on to pioneer multi-track recording. Paul played a key role in the birth of rock ‘n’ roll in the early 1950s when he teamed up with Gibson Guitar Corp. to help design a sleek model that bears his name. An instant success, its basic structure has barely changed over the decades. Despite arthritis and hearing problems, Paul remained an indefatigable musician, playing regularly at a New York jazz club into his 90s. Paul is survived by three sons, a daughter and several grandchildren and great grandchildren, Braunstein.

A song strongly suspected by many fans to be new from Radiohead has leaked online. The song, the MP3 of which bore the title ‘These Are My Twisted Words’, has been posted on YouTube -- click on the video below to hear it.

The track features frontman Thom Yorke‘s vocals and the guitar lines typical of the band, and is somewhat reminiscent to their 2001 single ‘Knives Out’. The group have recently been recording new material in Oxfordshire with producer Nigel Godrich.

The leak comes shortly after Radiohead released a new song, ‘Harry Patch (In Memory Of)’ – a tribute to Patch, who was the last surviving British World War 1 veteran until he died last month.

In other Radiohead news, Yorke recently said the band were looking to step away from releasing conventional albums in the future.

The band will headline the Reading And Leeds Festivals, which take place between August 28 and 30.

The nation’s cellphone networks could suffer “potentially catastrophic” cyberattacks by iPhone-wielding hackers at home and abroad if iPhone owners are permitted to legally jailbreak their shiny wireless devices — that’s what Apple claims.  A jailbroken iPhone is a weapon of mass disruption, Apple claims.

The Copyright Office is considering a request by the Electronic Frontier Foundation to legalize the widespread practice of jailbreaking, in which iPhone owners hack their devices to accept software that hasn’t been approved for distribution through the iPhone App Store. Apple made the claim in comments filed last week (.pdf) with the agency.

The company’s filing explained that jailbreaking could allow hackers to altering the iPhone’s BBP — the “baseband processor” software, which enables a connection to cell phone towers.

By tinkering with this code, “a local or international hacker could potentially initiate commands (such as a denial of service attack) that could crash the tower software, rendering the tower entirely inoperable to process calls or transmit data,” Apple wrote the government. “Taking control of the BBP software would be much the equivalent of getting inside the firewall of a corporate computer — to potentially catastrophic result.

“The technological protection measures were designed into the iPhone precisely to prevent these kinds of pernicious activities, and if granted, the jailbreaking exemption would open the door to them,” Apple added.

When it comes to electronic dance-music, one would be hard-pressed to make the argument that Brooklyn is on a par with, say, Detroit or Berlin. But if Brooklyn wasn’t part of NYC, and was instead was an independent municipality (which was actually the case until 1898), it would be the country’s fifth-largest city. In an era where Boulder, Colorado, can have an electronic-music festival—that burg’s Communikey get-together is a damn fine one, by the way—surely the county of Kings should host its own fest. At least, that’s the thinking behind the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival, which will be taking over the postindustrial arts space Old American Can Factory for a sprawling12-hour hoedown on Saturday 8.

Computerworld – Lime Group Chairman Mark Gorton found himself in the hot seat last week during a hearing on the problem of inadvertent data leaks on peer-to-peer (P2P) networks including his company’s, LimeWire. The hearing was held by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Furious lawmakers blasted Gorton over what they claimed was his company’s continued failure to ensure that users of LimeWire software did not share files inadvertently. The scathing criticism came in the wake of testimony by two witnesses at the hearing. Robert Boback, CEO of Tiversa Inc., a P2P networking monitoring service, disclosed how he had discovered highly sensitive government data, ncluding presidential motorcade routes, on LimeWire networks.

The other witness was Progress and Freedom Foundation’s Thomas Sydnor, who said his experiments with LimeWire’s P2P software had revealed it to be extremely susceptible to inadvertent file sharing. The disclosures led to committee chairman Edolphus Towns (D-NY) saying he would soon introduce a bill seeking to ban the use of P2P software on government networks.

In a conversation with Computerworld, Gorton flatly rejected some of the testimony. He claimed that concerns about data leaks on P2P networks are being fueled and orchestrated by music labels concerned more about copyright infringement on P2P networks than anything else.

Apple tried to silence owner of exploding iPod with gagging order – Times Online.

Apple attempted to silence a father and daughter with a gagging order after the child’s iPod music player exploded and the family sought a refund from the company.

The Times has learnt that the company would offer the family a full refund only if they were willing to sign a settlement form. The proposed agreement left them open to legal action if they ever disclosed the terms of the settlement.
