Everybody asking what our festival will look like this year, what we expect for “Call for entries” or how to be part of the B-Seite festival, here are some informations:

- We expect primarily entries for exciting visual exhibition projects or installations (gladly interactive), audio-video-performances (also with dance or theater if it’s not too long or too complex to organize) and workshop ideas (targeting an showable output instead of showcases or software trainings). Please attach links to examples and your contact information)

- Vjs are very welcome at our festival and there are slots/possibilities to represent yourself. But we don’t realy offer a budget or accommodation for that. Be our guest, join, use the festival for networking and inspiration.

- Discuss, offer yourself als a helping hand, represent yourself and inform yourself via registration to our new board at www.jetztkultur.de/forum

The Reel Festival (formally the Reel Movement) will take place from May 28th to June 1st at the Somerville Theater, 55 Davis Square, Somerville, MA. The festival, organized by filmmakers Rod Webber, Ali Jalet and David Grophear, is a quarterly independent film showcase, featuring all genres, lengths and styles of films.

According to Webber, “The Reel Festival is a collaborative of like-minded individuals who share more than a dream. They share a mission. Our goal is to create a seed-bed for films which personify innovation, individuality and daring strokes of bold new cinema.

“Boston is known for its history and its wealth of universities and artists, but it has also got a vibrant filmmaking community, which has seen an explosion in the past couple of years, with the passing of tax incentives.” said Webber. “Being the birthplace of the American Revolution, it is no surprise that it has given birth to a new revolution in film.”

Webber said it is in that spirit that the festival organizers “hope to achieve a place for film that embodies individuality and expressiveness. Films that challenge and explore.” The festival’s formula is to headline a feature film, along with several dozen shorts. The last Reel Festival featured Webber’s controversial documentary A Man Among Giants and garnered attention from both the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe.

Webber, about whom the Boston Globe wrote, “the [director] to watch,” will be featuring his experimental film Northern Comfort, starring Webber and Greta Gerwig (Greenberg, Friends with Benefits), The film, shot in three days, is described as an existentialist character-study, in which Webber and Gerwig encounter a slice of snowy, northern Americana as they walk, talk, and drive their way to Canada for employment and health-care, respectively.

The main characters, Horace (Webber) and Cassandra (Gerwig), meet while traveling to Canada. Guided only by a set of books-on-tape of Greek philosopher Socrates, and bound together by circumstance, the mismatched duo must learn to work together or meander aimlessly throughout the frozen wilderness. When Cassandra is confronted with the reality that her sickness is worsening, she must decide whether to stick it out with Horace, or find her own way, knowing that her time is running out.

The Reel Festival is still accepting shorts of any genre for this month’s festival. Webber said they are also looking for features for the August/September showcase. For anyone wishing to submit, Webber can be reached at rod@rodwebber.com. Adds Webber, “We will consider any kind of movie. Just as long as you have something to say, we’ll help you say it.”

World renowned Director and Filmmaker, David Lynch is known for his creativity and big ideas. He attributes his ability to catch creative ideas to his 35 years practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique. Inspired by his experience of “diving within” through meditation, David Lynch has established a Foundation that is dedicated to providing students with the opportunity to learn how to meditate. The David Lynch Foundation funds and implements stress reducing programs that improve creativity, brain functioning, and academic performance. These programs have also been documented to reduce ADHD and other learning disorders, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. The Transcendental Meditation technique is the most thoroughly researched and widely practiced program in the world for developing the full potential of human consciousness. The Foundation was established in 2005 and has provided millions of dollars to teach the TM technique to thousands of students all over the world.

After three successful years of implementing the TM technique in schools, The David Lynch Foundation introduces DLF.TV: The new Online TV Channel that celebrates consciousness, creativity and bliss. DLF.TV will showcase high quality video content from the David Lynch Foundation events, compelling profiles and documentaries, exclusive content from David Lynch, and explore all aspects of creativity.

We hope you enjoy the site and your feedback is always appreciated. New content is continually added to the site so make sure to keep coming back for more!

Each year, POV brings 14 to 16 new films to public television viewers. Our summer series and year-round specials push the boundaries of nonfiction television with work from emerging and established filmmakers that reflects the range and diversity of American voices — viewpoints that enrich, enlarge, challenge and refine our experience of the world.

If your nonfiction film has a strong perspective, a dedication to craft, contemporary relevance and a passion for your topic, then the POV series is the best place for a national television broadcast. If you believe the entire country should see your film, POV is for you.

POV films are seen in 97% of the country with an average audience of 2-4 million per broadcast, making POV the most-watched independent documentary showcase on television today. Thousands see our films in community and educational screenings around the country, and our website has millions of visitors each year. We also develop strategic national press and promotional campaigns to highlight the issues explored in POV films.

POV is filmmaker-focused; intent on supporting and presenting the work of today’s best contemporary storytellers. We believe in the power of stories to change minds and hearts, enlarging our understanding of the world around us. Our goal is to surround each film with the tools to ensure a long and active life on television and beyond.

Eligibility

POV considers work that fits all of the following criteria:

Nonfiction only. Works that integrate some fictional elements or create genre hybrids can be considered. Please do not submit docudramas, reenactments, or performance pieces. When in doubt, please call our office, (212) 989-8121, ext. 380.

Works by independent filmmakers. Works produced by filmmakers in association with a station or an organization are acceptable if editorial control was entirely in the hands of the filmmaker. Instructional films, films made for a client, and sponsored films are not eligible.

Works that have not been broadcast nationally. POV expects to provide the broadcast premiere of a program. POV will, however, consider a work when it is of special merit and has had only limited television exposure (such as broadcast on local public TV stations or on cable systems with limited geographical reach).

Works by Non-U.S. based filmmakers. POV welcomes and encourages submissions from filmmakers worldwide. If your film has not been previously broadcast in the US and meets all other eligibility requirements you may submit to POV for consideration.

Works released within the past four years. POV will consider exceptional works completed before this date only if they have achieved significant recognition through festivals, awards or reviews. However, the producer or distributor must contact our office to obtain clearance before the work is submitted. Eligibility of films released prior to the four-year cut-off date is solely at the discretion of the Executive Director.

Works that are complete or near completion. POV considers completed work or fine cuts for standard acquisition. The series also occasionally provides limited funds for completion costs such as sound editing, mixing, negative cutting, on-line editing, etc. Co-production funds are available in certain circumstances. Completion funding will be applied towards the acquisition fee for broadcast rights. Samples, assemblies, rough cuts or excerpts usually cannot be considered for broadcast in the upcoming season, but may be eligible for support as a work-in-progress. See the “In The Works” section below for details.

Works not previously submitted to POV Exceptions will be made for work that was previously submitted in non-final form, and for a small number of producers who are invited to re-submit their films. Producers who have been invited to resubmit should call our office before completing their submission form. Producers whose work has significantly changed since the previous submission should contact our office. All other previously submitted works will be disqualified.

Works of any length will be considered. Short films (30 mins. and under) are welcome and encouraged. Please note that producers may be asked to cut works longer than 51:20 to comply with the POV/PBS broadcast format.

Works that comply with PBS underwriting guidelines. For details on PBS National Program Funding Standards and Practices, please visit the PBS web site.

The Executive Director reserves the right to make exceptions to these guidelines in special cases.

Soon after, director Paul Turano wrote a list of the tragic events he distinctly remembered witnessing on TV as a child in the 1970s and early 1980s. By adopting a child’s perspective, the film evokes his experience of learning about the outside world through news broadcasts, and the accompanying realization of threatened safety from forces outside his immediate family and community. As the sense of vulnerability grows throughout the film from abstract threats to more immediate and actual ones, the seemingly innocent and idyllic world of his childhood becomes overshadowed by an increasing awareness of its fragility and precariousness.

From I Covered My Eyes (2008)

a film by

Paul Turano

My work from over 15 years as a practicing image maker has developed through autobiographical and essayistic experimental strategies, from small meditations to expansive explorations. I examine the process of image making as a way of communicating personal, social and political ideas or interpretations of history, from both the domestic and the public spheres. The images and sounds I present refer to subjects as far away as Mars and as close as my own back porch.

I work with film and video, often integrating these formats in the same piece. My current work investigates the effect of mediated experience on the construction of personal identity and memory. I Covered My Eyes juxtaposes television news broadcasts I witnessed as a child with my family’s own contemporaneous home movie footage, and examines how those images helped shape my sense of the human capacity for wrongdoing. In 2007, I received a grant from the LEF Foundation Moving Image Fund that has enabled me to complete this work and develop my digital video essay We the Ecotopia, a meditation on environmental sustainability exemplified by the small island of Tikopia in the Solomon Islands. When faced with a microcosmic equivalent of the resource depletion, monocultural food dependency and over-population issues we currently face on a global level, the Tikopians re-envisioned their relationship to these practices to save their island from destruction. Currently I am in the pre-production phases of this project and have begun shooting in 16:9 digital video and HD formats.

My ongoing work in 16mm has focused on the transformation of domestic space into a metaphor for autobiographical experiences. Two recent works, Porch Film: 76 Day St. Apt. #2, from 2004, and Windows onto Montebello Rd., currently in the editing phase, utilize similar observational strategies for depicting personal space as a vehicle for social and psychological transformation. The personal poetic approaches to the image in these films is driven by the more prosaic use of sound that provides both a supplementary emotional register as well as a contextual grounding in a larger social or political moment. As in all my work, the strategy of autobiography functions as a construction through which I may examine the larger issues that both intrigue and challenge me.

The State of Indie

The articles that I’ve chosen for review are by Anne Thompson, columnist for Variety. Both articles detail the facts of Indie decline and are well worth your time.

Theoretically, in America we have a capitalistic financial system. In this system, some large and small businesses will fail as the economy deteriorates. Small independent businesses are especially susceptible. That’s not to say that some shouldn’t, due to poor planning, poor product and poor management. But in America today, I don’t see capitalism. I’m not sure what the system is called but I’ve observed its behavior. It props up and bails out poorly managed large businesses while letting small businesses and individuals fail, in true capitalistic form. And as if that wasn’t enough, it allows these same poorly managed large businesses to buy the assets of the small.

But what can anyone do to change this? Plenty. We in the independent media community or for that matter in any independent community can build coalitions of like-minded people and spend our dollars to support each other, our ideas, and our products. In that way, we are really supporting ourselves. At the end of the day, it really is up to us, if we’d only recognize it.
