“Mothers, lock up your children; fathers, lock up your beer…” So begins Bad Blood and Brushfire, the debut album from Boston based electro-pop quartet Provocateur. Featuring the sly, sultry vocals and darkly witty wordplay of frontman Matthew Connor, and anchored by the sinuous, silky synths and beats of Stacia Tucker, Provocateur have crafted a sound that is sexy, smooth, and polished to an electric sheen by producer Jeremy Page of That Handsome Devil. Including twelve irresistibly danceable tracks about addictive love, sexual confusion, and Twitter-generation aimlessness, Bad Blood and Brushfire draws on diverse sounds ranging from Depeche Mode to The Faint to Justin Timberlake to create a seductively brooding, yet immediate pop sound.

Matthew and Stacia are joined on stage by the debonair yet dangerous Adam Hodges on the bass and the ever charming Berklee grad Chris Lampner on the drums. With festival appearances, headlining gigs, and opening slots for artists such as Client, IAMX, Freezepop, and My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, their high-energy performances have won over fans and filled dance floors throughout New England.

Pronounced “Enlighten”, veteran DJ Lenny Sosa has been making his mark throughout the east coast since 1997, playing numerous clubs, bars, parties, raves, events, and internet radio shows. Most known for his epic Breakbeat sets, NLYTN has such an eclectic taste in music that his signature stamp can be heard throughout many genres within the electronic music scene.

“I’ve always been a huge fan of all different kinds of music and became consumed with these sub-genres of house. I ended up falling in love with music and DJing all over again” says NLYTN. With this love began a new venture for the DJ, taking his knowledge and experience in the industry to a higher level when he created Mixtill6.com – a forum where DJs, producers, promoters, and supporters could go to showcase their sets, production, and post parties. “I was psyched to be able to give artists and other music lovers the ability to download new material, give feedback and most importantly embrace the music! Mixtill6.com has been constantly evolving into bigger things. We even had ‘Mixtill6 Radio’ which was an internet radio station that ran for 2 years with shows being broadcast from various locations across the globe. It was pretty awesome, and was great promotion for the website” says NLYTN.

With a new found taste for exploring the industry, 2007 found NLYTN finally taking the next step, where he began to produce his own music. With that the record label known as Mixtill6 Records – a spin off Mixtill6.com – was born. Now with 30 tracks under his belt, NLYTN can confidently say he has really started to find his sound.

In 2009, Mixtill6 Records has made some epic strides. landing a proper distribution contract with Believe Digital, Mixtill6 Records is now ready to show what they are all about!

Please stay tuned for more info on this artist, and Mixtill6 Records thank you for your support!

D-Lux has played at some of the best clubs in Boston including Estate, Phoenix Landing, as well as made appearances at the infamous late-night member’s only club, Rise.

Versatility can sometimes be difficult for other DJ’s. Most stick to one type of music genre, venue and crowd. D-Lux is a splendid exception to this rule. Whether she’s spinning in a nightclub, a bar, a fashion boutique, a swanky hotel or spa, her music is always unique, beautiful and crowd-pleasing.

It was called mixtill6 Radio, but was not what he wanted to focus on and was shut down regretfully.

In 2004 NLYTN was getting bored with the Breakbeat genre when he discovered Tech, Minimal and Electro house, and began focusing all of his interest in those genres. He began playing it at clubs, although it wasn’t really the geographical area favorite, he began getting positive response from the club goers. NLYTN pretty much became consumed with these sub-genres of house, falling in love with the music and djing again.

The Right to Speak
In President Obama’s speech to the United Nations on September 23, 2009, he spoke of a ‘new direction’. Two years ago, four solitary nations voted against the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, they were Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States of America. The Australian government has since reversed its vote and now support the international human rights standard toward Indigenous people.

The American Indian Movement asks the question of the Obama Administration: Will his administration recognize and support the international standard approved by the vast majority of the world’s nations?

The United Nations 64th year brings world leaders together to our sacred homeland to discuss the effects of the world’s problems to humankind. The American Indian Movement respects the right of all world leaders to speak. We support the right of Moammar Al Gathafi, leader of Libya. We respect the right of Evo Moralas, President of Bolivia. We respect the right of Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela. We respect the right of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of Iran. We respect the right to speak at the United Nations of all the world leaders visiting our homeland.

We often talk in terms of the first world, or the west; or the second world, the east; or the third world, or the non-aligned nations. Another important dimension to this concept is the fourth world of natural and Indigenous people. Peoples whose populations oftentimes go beyond geo-political boundaries. While these struggles have been going on for hundreds of years, the international community has, for the most part, ignored this reality.

One of the greatest crimes against humanity occurred right here in the United States of America. Support for the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People is a start to right this great wrong.

Clyde Bellecourt, co-founder American Indian Movement
Bill Means, International Indian Treaty Council
Chief Terrance Nelson, Vice Chairman American Indian Movement

I Covered My Eyes investigates childhood notions of threat and safety by juxtaposing TV news broadcasts of tragic world events with home movie footage. The project was first conceived after seeing the televised images broadcast live on September 11 2001, and wondering what children must be feeling upon witnessing this horrific act within our own borders.

Soon after, director Paul Turano wrote a list of the tragic events he distinctly remembered witnessing on TV as a child in the 1970s and early 1980s. By adopting a child’s perspective, the film evokes his experience of learning about the outside world through news broadcasts, and the accompanying realization of threatened safety from forces outside his immediate family and community. As the sense of vulnerability grows throughout the film from abstract threats to more immediate and actual ones, the seemingly innocent and idyllic world of his childhood becomes overshadowed by an increasing awareness of its fragility and precariousness.

The Boston-based band is one of a handful of Muslim punk bands that emerged in the United States in the past few years.

The members of this four-person rock group with South Asian roots hold varying views on religion. One says he’s an atheist; three others identify as Muslims — both practicing and non-practicing. For them, punk music is a way to rebel against their conservative cultural upbringing and the frustrations of growing up a young Muslim in America.

“We aren’t [just] some alternative to a stereotypical Muslim. We actually might be offering some sort of insights for people at large about religion, about the world,” said 26-year-old bassist Basim Usmani.

Blending traditional South Asian rhythms with punk rock beats, they sing in both English and Punjabi. (Kominas means “scum-bag” in Punjabi, according to the band.) Their songs can be at once political, serious, satirical and insinuating.

Their risqué lyrics and provocative song titles such as “Sharia Law in the USA,” “Suicide Bomb the GAP” and “Rumi was a Homo” — a protest song against homophobia in the American Muslim community — have drawn the attention of Muslims, non-Muslims, fans and critics alike.

“You sort of have to throw it in peoples’ faces and be shocking in order to give people a different way to think about stuff,” said Usmani.

“These punk, metal and rap scenes – so-called extreme music scenes — are addressing issues that mainstream music doesn’t,” said Mark LeVine, a professor of Middle Eastern history at University of California, Irvine, who is also a musician and author of “Heavy Metal Islam.”

Before the Islamic punk movement in North America had a voice, it had a story. The Muslim punk scene began to gel in 2003 when novelist and convert to Islam, Michael Muhammad Knight self-published his book, “The Taqwacores” about a fictional Muslim punk scene in Buffalo, New York.

The book opens with a poem called “Muhammed was a Punk Rocker” and describes both conventional and unconventional characters including a Shi’ite skinhead, a conservative Sunni Muslim, a burka-wearing feminist punk and a Sufi who sports a Mohawk and drinks alcohol.

“The punk rock kids I would hang out with weren’t even Muslim,” 31-year old Knight recalls. “They were so fiercely individualistic — I wish that I could be a Muslim in that way: not be ashamed of my confusion, not be ashamed of my doubts. Just be myself and be proud of who I am.”

The novel’s title, “Taqwacore,” is a hybrid word stemming from the Arabic “taqwa,” meaning “god consciousness,” and “core” referring to “hardcore” — a genre of punk music. It’s now a general term for Muslim punk rock.

The popularity of the book, which Knight said was born out of a search to find his identity as a Muslim-American, grew in underground youth circles and online.

It didn’t take long before real-life “taqwacore” bands like The Kominas began blooming across the country.

“It makes sense why punk has been the music of choice for young, politically active Muslims who are musical,” said LeVine. “The straight edge movement in punk which was about no drugs, no alcohol, was clean yet very intense and political. It’s a way for them to rebel against their families in some extreme ways yet still be ritualistically, ‘good Muslims.’ ”

“Taqwacore” gave voice to many young Muslim-Americans who felt muted by circumstances and created an opening for bands like Al-Thawra, Vote Hezbollah, and Secret Trial Five — an all-girl punk band out of Vancouver, Canada.

In the summer of 2007, five of the taqwacore bands organized a “taqwa-tour” of the northeastern United States. They played in city after city, traveling in a green school bus with TAQWA painted on the front bought by Knight for $2,000 on eBay.

This summer, The Kominas continue to strike a chord with audiences around the country, hitting cities from San Francisco to New York on a multi-city tour.

The taqwacore movement has also inspired two upcoming films – a dramatic feature film based on the book and a documentary.

Many conservative Muslims may peg young taqwacores as heretic for their suggestive and irreverent lyrics. But the musicians say they are just trying to show both cultures how broad the spectrum of belief can be.

Like many young adults balancing their religious beliefs with American culture, some young Muslims in the United States say it’s a constant struggle to be accepted in both worlds.

“I had a lot of conflicted feelings growing up a Muslim in America,” said 25-year-old Kominas drummer Imran Malik. “It was hard not being able to do the same things that everyone else around you is doing without feeling guilty about them.”

Knight, who grew up with a Catholic mother and white supremacist father, converted to Islam when he was 16. He said his message is not one of blasphemy but rather an extension of his discontent with the rigid etiquette that dictates certain practices within Islam and the stereotypes of Muslims in American.

“Muslims haven’t been fully accepted as Americans but the American experience hasn’t been accepted as something that can contribute to the Muslim world,” said Knight.

Knight said writing the book helped him and others connect through shared experiences.

“When I first wrote it, I felt like there would never be a place for me in the Muslim community and that has really turned around a lot,” he said. “The book gave me the community I needed, it connected me to all these kids that were also confused and who also went through the things that I went through.”

That connection is vital to taqwacore music, bassist Usmani said.

“The music is great, but the conversation is the key to all of this. The dialogue that we have inspired is really invaluable.”

“I don’t think Islam is ever going to go away, I’m just trying to see how it best fits in my life.”
