thanks john…for my earliest musical memories at the jukeboxes in the northern irish seaside town i grew up in.
you captured my heart as a four year old,and by the time i was seven i was fully tuned in…
i can vividly see myself standing alone,frozen still in that amusement arcade on main street in portrush staring at the jukebox,
where ‘help’ would come on chiming several times throughout the day.
‘help’ was such a strange record for a nervous child to hear……under the happy uplifting sound i could vaguely tell that this life wasn’t gonna be a bed of roses…
the words in that little 45 single unlocked whatever depth there might be in me…..absolutely.
i didn’t like growing up….i remember constantly waking up to a sense of dread for school…the bullies…an unpredictable father…..the future…
and by the time i was a teenager you were still there talking to me through songs…
‘working class hero’ stopped me in my tracks…..it clarified my own experience so far….
i’d been sent to shrinks who were useless….when all i needed was my record collection…you john, and later on, david bowie….
you both pointed to the door that was right for me to go through,and i love you for it….i found a lifetime purpose through songwriting.
i sit here wondering what you’d think of my voice and stylings all over your song..
it would have been so easy to go with that gorgeous folkish approach of your own definitive version,
but if there was one thing you stood for,it was to be an individual and to think for yourself…
so i chose to be only myself as i inhabited your brilliant inflammable words and melody.
maybe you would have loved it…maybe you would have hated it…
i dunno…i’ve learned not to second guess anyone in this life.
i miss you not being around…your new records…the strong things you’d say…
you were taken far too soon..
but i keep up with what yoko is up to…
she’s an amazing lady..it’s a measure of your own weight that you gravitated towards a personality like her..i adore her.

Native American tribe reclaims slice of the Hamptons after court victory | World news | The Observer.

From a distance the teardrop-shaped peninsula looks just like any other bit of the famed Hamptons shoreline. Thick woods crowd down to the water’s edge, and through the trees houses and roads can be glimpsed.

But this land is not part of the Hamptons, neither is it really part of the United States any more. This patch – in the middle of the playground to Manhattan’s social elite – is proudly and fiercely Native American country.

Almost four centuries since their first contact with the white man and after a 32-year court battle that has just ended in victory, the tiny Shinnecock tribe has now been formally recognised by America’s federal government.

The decision means that the Shinnecock, numbering some 1,300 members, many of whom live in deep poverty compared with their wealthy neighbours, can apply for federal funding to build schools, health centres and set up their own police force. It means their tiny 750-acre reservation is now a semi-sovereign nation within the US, just like much bigger and more famous reservations in the west.

In order to qualify the Shinnecock literally had to prove that they existed, submitting thousands of pages of tribal records. It was a process that has left a bitter legacy. “Why do we need federal recognition to show we are who we are?” said Shinnecock leader Lance Gumbs as he sat in his office in the community centre. “It’s a humiliating, degrading and insensitive process. Why do Indian people have to go through that? No other peoples are treated like that.”

Many believe that the lengthy and painful process that the Shinnecock have been forced to go through is explained by the tribe’s position bang in the middle of the Hamptons, the string of Long Island towns where rich New Yorkers come to party away the summers. The difference between Shinnecock land and the rest of the Hamptons is jarring. The reservation, signalled by a line of stalls selling cheap cigarettes, sits side by side with the town of Southampton, heart of the Hamptons scene.

On the reservation, some roads are dusty and unpaved. The houses can be ramshackle. Unemployment can be a problem for many Shinnecock members. Outside it on the streets of Southampton, stretch limos and black Lexus prowl down streets lined with shops selling Ralph Lauren and Diane von Furstenberg. A real estate agent on Southampton’s main street happily advertises a local house going for $12.2m.

Historically – and indeed pretty much since Europeans first arrived in the area in the 1600s – the Shinnecock have been on the retreat. They lost land steadily as more and more Europeans began to farm their traditional territory, eventually leading to an agreement in 1703 that saw them confined to a broad swath of land around Southampton under a 1,000-year lease. However, in 1859 the pressure of development saw that deal scrapped by the settlers and the Shinnecock reduced to their current tiny holding. For years tribal members then eked out a living working on white farms or helping local fishermen and whalers.

Now that is all set to change as a key part of federal recognition allows the Shinnecock to do the one thing that has changed Native American fortunes more than anything else in the last 100 years: build a casino. Gumbs now sees real power finally in Shinnecock hands. “We are going after everything we are entitled to,” he said. “I am not a big fan of Southampton. They were happy as long as we were the good little Indians in the corner. Well, that’s changed now.”

It is unlikely that the Shinnecock will build their casino in the Hamptons itself, which is already notoriously crowded and traffic-clogged. Instead the simple threat of it is likely to eventually see them negotiate the right to build a casino elsewhere in Long Island, an area that is seen as ripe for the development of a gambling mecca.

Either way, it seems Shinnecock fortunes are set to be dramatically reversed. For many tribal members it is a chance to rescue what remains of the tribe’s culture. Sitting in the tribal museum and cultural centre, Winonah Warren, 71, remembers being taken as a young girl to see a Shinnecock medicine man. She sees the deer that she spots in her garden as a spiritual sign.

She practises a Native American religion in which she takes peyote. It is about as far from the Hamptons scene as it is possible to get. “I love being on the reservation. Even when I am not here, I feel that my heart is,” she said, touching her chest.

Some even feel that federal recognition – and the prospect of a casino – might be the beginning of a wider Shinnecock resurgence. In the white land grab of 1859 an area of land called the Shinnecock Hills was taken. Many Shinnecock held it to be sacred ground. It is now full of rich houses and the famous Shinnecock Hills golf club, with total real estate worth more than a billion dollars. The Shinnecock have sued to get it back.

For many of the Hamptons residents the prospect no doubt seems ridiculous: a relic of ancient history and long-forgotten wrongs. But not so for some of the Shinnecock. Elizabeth Haile, a 79-year-old tribal member, remembers her grandmother telling her how the Shinnecock Hills had been stolen.

Does she think the tribe will ever get them back? “Yeah,” she said with no hesitation, and then added with a smile: “It is a prediction. Some people never thought we would get federally recognised.”

48% See Government Today As A Threat to Individual Rights – Rasmussen Reports™.

Nearly half of American Adults see the government today as a threat to individual rights rather than a protector of those rights.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 48% of Adults see the government today as a threat to rights. Thirty-seven percent (37%) hold the opposite view. Fifteen percent (15%) are undecided.

Most Republicans (74%) and unaffiliateds (51%) consider the government to be a threat to individual rights. Most Democrats (64%) regard the government as a protector of rights.

Additionally, most Americans (52%) say it is more important for the government to protect individual rights than to promote economic growth. Just 31% say promoting economic growth is more important. But again a sizable number (17%) of Adults aren’t sure which is more important.

Men strongly believe it is more important for the government to protect individual rights, while women are almost evenly divided on the question.

Fifty-five percent (55%) of whites feel the emphasis should be on protecting individual rights. African-Americans are closely divided over which is more important.

There is little partisan disagreement when it comes to individual rights versus economic growth.

Data released earlier this week shows that 62% believe politicians want the government to have more power and money. At the same time, 58% think most voters want less power and money for the government.

This gap helps explain why just 21% believe that government today has the consent of the governed.

The Declaration of Independence asserts that governments are instituted among men to protect certain inalienable rights including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Sonikross AKA Nigel Ross first appeared on the dance music scene as SonikKross. His debut single, a collaboration with Michel Spiegel, (Nuw Idol, WellWicked Records) “SonikKross – Walking With Dreamz”, got major aclaim with a No.1 from John 00 Fleming in DJ magazine and pride of place as the last tune on the “Christopher Lawrence, Around The World” compilation!
In 2004, he and DJ friend John Hutchison(Johnny Frenetic) formed the live house band Tokyoblu. Nigel took on what became a huge task of co-writing and producing the music to be played live by the band at the monthly Edinburgh club also called Tokyoblu. The bands live set up consisted of 2 vocalists, guitar, bass, keys, drums and decks with Nigel controlling things from a laptop and also adding extra guitar on his rockier numbers!!
They gained great success on the live scene being touted as the “Scottish Bassment Jaxx” and packed out the monthly clubnight playing nonstop sets constructed just like a DJ set. This then transfered itself to festivals with amazing sets to thousands at T in the park, V festval and Becks Fusions.
Tokyoblu’s debut EP “Groove Tonight” (containing no less then 4 mixes produced by Nigel Ross) charted at no3 in the DMC chart and no6 in the Upfront House chart. This added to some amazing bootlegs have ensured Nigel’s mixes are sitting in many a top DJ’s record box.
The next chapter has only just begun! With numerous remixes due for release and new original material under way there’s big things in store from Sonikross!

Jim was a Llewellyn setter born of pureblood champion field stock in Louisiana. Though his litter mates were selling for $25 each, a goodly sum in 1925, he was considered the most unlikely of the litter and came into Sam VanArsdale’s hands for less than half that amount. Attempts to train Jim for the field seemed futile as he lay in the shade watching while the trainer worked with the three other dogs. However, when taken to the field that fall for the first time, he immediately went to a covey of quail, came up on perfect point, held steady until the quail was shot, and immediately brought the bird to Mr. VanArsdale on the order to “fetch”. He proved to be a marvelous hunting dog, knowing where there were quail, and refusing to hunt where there were none. His master, an avid hunter who traveled from state to state hunting, kept track of birds shot over his beloved dog. He stopped counting at 5,000, a total no other dog ever reached. Outdoor Life Magazine termed him “The Hunting Dog of the Country”.

However, Jim was much more than just a champion hunting dog since Mr. VanArsdale found, quite by accident while in the field one day, that his dog could understand what he was saying to him and carried out his commands. It was a hot day, and Mr. VanArsdale said, “Let’s go over and rest a bit under that Hickory tree”. Although in a woods of numerous kinds of trees, he went to the Hickory. Surprised by this, he asked Jim to go to a Walnut, then a Cedar, a stump, and a tin can, which he did rapidly and perfectly.

This was the start of the amazing things the dog did on command. When told to do so, he could go out on the street and locate a car by make, color, out-of-state, or a license number. From a crowd he could select the “man who sells hardware”, and the one who “takes care of sick people”, or the “visitor from Kansas City”.

He carried out instructions given to him in any foreign language, shorthand, or Morse Code. He was capable of predicting the outcome of future events. He chose the winner of seven Kentucky Derbies, The World Series of baseball and the sex of unborn babies.

Mr. VanArsdale arranged for a demonstration at the University of Missouri with Dr. Durant, head veterinarian. He could find nothing physically abnormal from any other dog. He was tested by a group of college students and passed each command with flying colors.

In 1935 Jim performed at the Kemmerer Hotel in Kemmerer, Wyoming. After his successful perfomance, an article was written in the Gazette of Kemmerer on Friday, August 30, 1935, telling of this performance and referring to Jim as “The Wonder Dog”.

Jim also performed before the Missouri Legislature and at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia. Newspaper and magazine writers came to witness Jim and were stunned. They wrote of incredulous things they saw and Jim’s fame spread across the United States and elsewhere. He was featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

He is buried in Marshall’s Ridge Park Cemetery with a grave stone and is probably the only animal in a people cemetery. Caretakers say his is the most visited grave there and is seldom without flowers and coins left on it. The site of the Jim The Wonder Dog Garden off the northwest corner of the Square is the place once occupied by the Ruff Hotel where Jim lived with his owner Sam VanArsdale, the hotel manager. This is Marshall’s way of commemorating one of it’s most famous “citizens”.

News of the cancellation follows last week’s raid by the Israeli military against an aid flotilla bound for Gaza, which killed nine pro-Palestine activists. However, the Pixies’ publicist in Israel, Shuki Weiss, did not name the raid — or anything else — as the reason for the cancellation.

Despite the political unrest in the region, performers including Elton John and Rod Stewart still plan to play Israel this summer, according to AP.

Two weeks ago Elvis Costello canceled his plans to perform in the country. The British singer-songwriter took to his website to explain his reasons, citing what he described as the “intimidation” and “humiliation” of Palestinians by Israel.

Gil Scott-Heron also recently canceled an appearance in Tel Aviv after protesters interrupted one of his shows at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Scores of veiled women, men and families poured into a cultural center in Beirut’s southern suburbs on Tuesday night for the opening of the third annual Iranian film festival in Beirut.

The festival is sponsored by the Iranian cultural center in Beirut and Hezbollah’s TV channel Al-Manar, among other organizations, and highlights the intertwined relationship between the two countries.

For the next four days, festival-goers can watch two Iranian films per night at the festival center, located two floors underground.

For the opening, the festival committee chose to screen the 2006 release “In the Name of the Father” by the award-winning Iranian filmmaker Ebrahim Hatamikia.

The film is about a young female archaeologist finding mines at a dig site that her own father, a former military commander in the Iranian army during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war, placed there.

Hatamikia, one of Iran's greatest contemporary directors, traveled to Beirut to attend the opening ceremony of the festivities.

“It’s the first time in two years I talk…. but Lebanon is special,” he told the audience in the jampacked auditorium where women had been seated to the left and men were asked to take their seats to the right of the stage.

Iranian-filmfestldskdsHatamikia also spoke of the image many have of Beirut as a war-torn city always on the brink of conflict. His own son, he said, was worried about him going there.

But, said Hatamikia, “I know it’s not like that.”

The director recently attended another international Iranian film festival.

Last fall, he was one of a group of Iranian filmmakers, screenwriters, and actors who traveled to California for the kickoff of a mini-Iranian film festival in Los Angeles put on by the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Hatamikia did not have enough time to stay for a Q-and-A after the screening, but he agreed to swiftly answer a few questions from reporters.

One of the more controversial questions at the semi state-sponsored event came from a Lebanese journalist who wondered whether the controversial actress in “In the Name of Father,” Golshifteh Farahani, would risk apprehension if she returned to Iran.

“No, not at all. On the contrary,” answered Hatamikia, quoting assurances from the Iranian culture ministry.

Last year, media reports said that 26-year-old Farahani was hassled by Iranian authorities over her appearance as the romantic interest in Ridley Scott's Hollywood blockbuster “Body of Lies,” which tells the story of a CIA agent sent to Jordan to track down an Al Qaeda leader.The actress now lives in Paris.

Other Iranian films that will be shown at the festival include Mojtaba Raei’s “Birth of a Butterfly” and the acclaimed “Color of Paradise” by Majid Majidi.

The festival goes on until the end of this week at the Ressalat Theatre in the Ghobeiry area of Beirut.

Shosone Indians:

The historic Shoshone Indians, of the Uto-Aztecan linguistic stock, occupied territory in California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming, although most of them seemed to be settled in the Snake river area in Idaho.Historical documents from the Lewis & Clark expedition often refer to the Shoshone as the “Snake Indians”; the actual name “Shoshone” means “The Valley People” . The name means “inland”, or “in the valley”.The Shoshone were few in numbers, their total population being somewhere in the area of 8000.
In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant established a 100 square mile executive order reservation for the Lemhi Valley Shoshone, establishing the Lemhi Valley Indian Reservation for use by the Shoshone, Bannock, and Sheepeater tribes.

In 1905, nearly one hundred years after their first contact with the white man, the Lemhi Shoshone began their “Trail of Tears”, being forcibly removed from their ancestral homelands to the Fort Hall Indian Reservationto their newly “appointed” home.

An article by Professor Orlan J. Svingen of the History Department at Washington State University brings forth several injustices suffered by the Lemhi Shoshone.Prof. Svingen writes:
“But perhaps the ultimate act of dispossession was the Indian Claims Commission settlement involving the Lemhi people. During the 1960s, the ICC and the federal government determined that the Lemhi Claim to aboriginal lands would have to be submitted as part of the larger Shoshone-Bannock Claim. The Lemhis were prohibited from filing their own independent claim. When their claim, Docket #326-1, came before the ICC, the Lemhi claim to their land 200 miles north of Fort Hall totaled $4.5 million. Based on pressure from the federal government, the ICC, the Sho-Bans, and the Sho-Bans attorneys, the $4.5 million was assigned to the Shoshone Bannock general fund. Rather than dividing the 1971 Lemhi settlement among the approximately 500 Lemhis living at Fort Hall, it was, essentially, divided among as many as 3000 people living at Fort Hall–the overwhelming majority of whom had no direct or indirect tie to Lemhi lands.20 Opposition to the settlement was widespread among the Lemhi, but their dissatisfaction fell on the deaf ears of the Shoshone-Bannock majority and the Sho-Ban attorneys from the firm of Wilkinson, Cragun & Barker. Udale Simmer Tendoy, a Lemhi descendant, typified Lemhi opposition with his assessment of the ICC decision in 1971.”

Today, the Shoshone are still waiting to become a Federally recognized tribe, along with over 200 other Native American tribes such as the California Chumash and the North-Eastern Abenakis.There has been much controversy surrounding the U.S. Government’s plans to commemorate the bicentennial of the Lewis & Clark expedition.
Prof. Svingen comments on the proposed bicentennial celebration:
“…as the nation prepares to celebrate the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, it is difficult to consider how the country can celebrate the Corps of Discovery while such a debt to Sacajawea and her people remains such a scandal.”
