This will be the final part of this series.

There aren’t many things that I’m sure of these days and as I get older “sureness” becomes less clear. One issue that has repeated itself throughout my life and that I “am” sure about, is war;  its impact on the peoples of the world. War is “Death.”

And again we see how, once thought of, respectable organizations, media or foundations have been co-opted. It is as plain as the “nose on your face” when a peace organization legitimizes war to suit it’s constituents (i.e. the Greedy Ones) desires.

Enlightenment on the other hand seems a transitional experience. It probably wouldn’t occur if good and evil didn’t exist together. There’s the rub; as well as the anti-warrior’s challenge.

So you say you want a revolution. All you need do is shake them off!

First, let me apologize for being lax about updating this series. This is old but extremely important news, so please bear with me.

Old paradigms are always hard to shake and admitting one might have been fooled is a non-starter with most of us. I am concerned only with the truth as many of you are. If you are reading this series you know I don’t believe in or support any war. That is not to say that I will not defend myself but from my readings of the Founding Fathers , we – Americans – were warned about minding other people’s business.

Recently it was announced that Presdent Obama would be presented the Nobel Peace Prize. Alfred Nobel was a Swedish industrialist who invented dynamite and ballistite – explosives. The Peace Prize was to be administered in Norway.

According to Nobel’s will, the Peace Prize should be awarded to the person who: during the preceding year [...] shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses

The video I’ve attached is ingenious (Rah Rah to its creators) There really is no need in trying to imitate its message with my words.

And Thorbjørn – “I’m sure you’re not totally responsible for this decision but you’re their front man and will have to take the heat. Don’t do our world any more favors by legitimizing bad behavior.”

A couple of notes:

1. I watched the Nobel Prize announcement on the BBC. I believe you can still find the clip on its website. There is a man behind Thorbjørn Jagland, Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee that seems to begin to laugh as Jagland announces President Obama’s prize. Was he laughing because he was happy for the President or because he knew what bullshit this really was. We’ll never know.

It is a graphic image of the harsh realities of war: the fatally wounded young marine lying crumpled in the mud, his vulnerable face turned to the camera. And it is one the US defence secretary would rather you did not see.

Lance Corporal Joshua Bernard, pictured being tended by comrades in southern Afghanistan, died of his injuries soon after. Now the release of this record of the 21-year-old’s last moments has divided America, prompting furious debate over the sanitisation of war at a critical time for the military offensive.

The US defence secretary, Robert Gates, condemned the decision by the news agency Associated Press to publish. “I cannot imagine the pain and suffering Lance Corporal Bernard’s death has caused his family. Why your organisation would purposefully defy the family’s wishes, knowing full well that it will lead to yet more anguish, is beyond me.

“Your lack of compassion and common sense in choosing to put this image of their maimed and stricken child on the front page of multiple American newspapers is appalling.”

However, AP, whose photographer Julie Jacobson took the shot after being caught in the middle of an ambush while accompanying marines on patrol, said it had acted only after a “period of reflection” and argued that the picture illustrated the sacrifice and the bravery of those fighting in Afghanistan. “We feel it is our journalistic duty to show the reality of the war there, however unpleasant and brutal that sometimes is,” said Santiago Lyon, the director of photography for AP.

The row reflects rising tensions over the impact of the death toll on an already wavering American public, with support for the war dwindling and President Barack Obama warned this weekend by leading Democrats that any attempt to send more troops is likely to meet resistance in Congress.

It also recalls the controversy four years ago when the Pentagon finally released pictures of flag-draped coffins returning from Iraq, overturning a ban imposed in 1991 on the US media photographing military caskets in transit.

In that case, the concerns of families were also repeatedly cited as justification for suppressing images of the dead, and they were only published after a freedom of information request by a professor of journalism, who argued that they were a matter of public record. By contrast, the British media has regularly covered the return of coffins.

In extracts from her journal published by the US website huffingtonpost.com, Jacobson described the moment when she watched a marine lose his life “for the second time in my life”. “He was hit with the RPG which blew off one of his legs and badly mangled the other… I hadn’t seen it happen, just heard the explosion.” She described how she heard Bernard calling out that he could not breathe, and his friends telling him he was going to make it.

About 20 American newspapers and some websites used the image, sent out alongside photographs of Bernard’s life in uniform and his memorial service, last week, but it was taken on 14 August when Bernard’s patrol in the village of Dahaneh was ambushed. He was airlifted to the US base at Camp Leatherneck but died there of his wounds, the 19th American to lose his life in Helmand that month at the height of the fighting.

AP said the images had been shown to his family in advance, but said that reporters had not specifically asked the family’s permission to publish, admitting that his parents had not wanted the photographs to be used.

The son of a retired marine, Bernard, from New Portland in rural Maine, was described as a devout Christian, an Iraq war veteran, a keen snowboarder and an avid hiker. His father, John, described him as a “humble, shy, unassuming” man who did not smoke or drink and whose main friends were from his church group. Three weeks before Joshua died, Bernard Snr had written to his congressman expressing frustration at what he said was a change in the rules of engagement to spare civilians, calling the move “disgraceful, immoral and fatal” to American forces in combat.

Asked to sum up his son, John Bernard suggested the words “service and personal honour”.

But as America continues to debate the use of his image, Joshua Bernard has now come to symbolise something more: the suffering inflicted on America’s sons and daughters in uniform, and the unease of fellow citizens forced to confront the grim truth about their deaths.

The Reel Festival (formally the Reel Movement) will take place from May 28th to June 1st at the Somerville Theater, 55 Davis Square, Somerville, MA. The festival, organized by filmmakers Rod Webber, Ali Jalet and David Grophear, is a quarterly independent film showcase, featuring all genres, lengths and styles of films.

According to Webber, “The Reel Festival is a collaborative of like-minded individuals who share more than a dream. They share a mission. Our goal is to create a seed-bed for films which personify innovation, individuality and daring strokes of bold new cinema.

“Boston is known for its history and its wealth of universities and artists, but it has also got a vibrant filmmaking community, which has seen an explosion in the past couple of years, with the passing of tax incentives.” said Webber. “Being the birthplace of the American Revolution, it is no surprise that it has given birth to a new revolution in film.”

Webber said it is in that spirit that the festival organizers “hope to achieve a place for film that embodies individuality and expressiveness. Films that challenge and explore.” The festival’s formula is to headline a feature film, along with several dozen shorts. The last Reel Festival featured Webber’s controversial documentary A Man Among Giants and garnered attention from both the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe.

Webber, about whom the Boston Globe wrote, “the [director] to watch,” will be featuring his experimental film Northern Comfort, starring Webber and Greta Gerwig (Greenberg, Friends with Benefits), The film, shot in three days, is described as an existentialist character-study, in which Webber and Gerwig encounter a slice of snowy, northern Americana as they walk, talk, and drive their way to Canada for employment and health-care, respectively.

The main characters, Horace (Webber) and Cassandra (Gerwig), meet while traveling to Canada. Guided only by a set of books-on-tape of Greek philosopher Socrates, and bound together by circumstance, the mismatched duo must learn to work together or meander aimlessly throughout the frozen wilderness. When Cassandra is confronted with the reality that her sickness is worsening, she must decide whether to stick it out with Horace, or find her own way, knowing that her time is running out.

The Reel Festival is still accepting shorts of any genre for this month’s festival. Webber said they are also looking for features for the August/September showcase. It is a graphic image of the harsh realities of war: the fatally wounded young marine lying crumpled in the mud, his vulnerable face turned to the camera. And it is one the US defence secretary would rather you did not see.

Lance Corporal Joshua Bernard, pictured being tended by comrades in southern Afghanistan, died of his injuries soon after. Now the release of this record of the 21-year-old’s last moments has divided America, prompting furious debate over the sanitisation of war at a critical time for the military offensive.

The US defence secretary, Robert Gates, condemned the decision by the news agency Associated Press to publish. “I cannot imagine the pain and suffering Lance Corporal Bernard’s death has caused his family. Why your organisation would purposefully defy the family’s wishes, knowing full well that it will lead to yet more anguish, is beyond me.

“Your lack of compassion and common sense in choosing to put this image of their maimed and stricken child on the front page of multiple American newspapers is appalling.”

However, AP, whose photographer Julie Jacobson took the shot after being caught in the middle of an ambush while accompanying marines on patrol, said it had acted only after a “period of reflection” and argued that the picture illustrated the sacrifice and the bravery of those fighting in Afghanistan. “We feel it is our journalistic duty to show the reality of the war there, however unpleasant and brutal that sometimes is,” said Santiago Lyon, the director of photography for AP.

The row reflects rising tensions over the impact of the death toll on an already wavering American public, with support for the war dwindling and President Barack Obama warned this weekend by leading Democrats that any attempt to send more troops is likely to meet resistance in Congress.

It also recalls the controversy four years ago when the Pentagon finally released pictures of flag-draped coffins returning from Iraq, overturning a ban imposed in 1991 on the US media photographing military caskets in transit.

In that case, the concerns of families were also repeatedly cited as justification for suppressing images of the dead, and they were only published after a freedom of information request by a professor of journalism, who argued that they were a matter of public record. By contrast, the British media has regularly covered the return of coffins.

In extracts from her journal published by the US website huffingtonpost.com, Jacobson described the moment when she watched a marine lose his life “for the second time in my life”. “He was hit with the RPG which blew off one of his legs and badly mangled the other… I hadn’t seen it happen, just heard the explosion.” She described how she heard Bernard calling out that he could not breathe, and his friends telling him he was going to make it.

About 20 American newspapers and some websites used the image, sent out alongside photographs of Bernard’s life in uniform and his memorial service, last week, but it was taken on 14 August when Bernard’s patrol in the village of Dahaneh was ambushed. He was airlifted to the US base at Camp Leatherneck but died there of his wounds, the 19th American to lose his life in Helmand that month at the height of the fighting.

AP said the images had been shown to his family in advance, but said that reporters had not specifically asked the family’s permission to publish, admitting that his parents had not wanted the photographs to be used.

The son of a retired marine, Bernard, from New Portland in rural Maine, was described as a devout Christian, an Iraq war veteran, a keen snowboarder and an avid hiker. His father, John, described him as a “humble, shy, unassuming” man who did not smoke or drink and whose main friends were from his church group. Three weeks before Joshua died, Bernard Snr had written to his congressman expressing frustration at what he said was a change in the rules of engagement to spare civilians, calling the move “disgraceful, immoral and fatal” to American forces in combat.

Asked to sum up his son, John Bernard suggested the words “service and personal honour”.

But as America continues to debate the use of his image, Joshua Bernard has now come to symbolise something more: the suffering inflicted on America’s sons and daughters in uniform, and the unease of fellow citizens forced to confront the grim truth about their deaths.

On April 19, 1775, British and American soldiers exchanged fire in the Massachusetts towns of Lexington and Concord. On the night of April 18, the royal governor of Massachusetts, General Thomas Gage, commanded by King George III to suppress the rebellious Americans, had ordered 700 British soldiers, under Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith and Marine Major John Pitcairn, to seize the colonists’ military stores in Concord, some 20 miles west of Boston.

A system of signals and word-of-mouth communication set up by the colonists was effective in forewarning American volunteer militia men of the approach of the British troops. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem “Paul Revere’s Ride” tells how a lantern was displayed in the steeple of Christ Church on the night of April 18, 1775, as a signal to Paul Revere and others.

At Lexington Green, the British were met by approximately seventy American Minute Men led by John Parker. At the North Bridge in Concord, the British were confronted again, this time by 300 to 400 armed colonists, and were forced to march back to Boston with the Americans firing on them all the way. By the end of the day, the colonists were singing “Yankee Doodle” and the American Revolution had begun. Documents from the Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention, 1774-1789 includes a timeline of the events that followed.

Marina and the Diamonds is the stage name of Marina Diamandis, a Welsh-born solo artist based in London. Her musical style ranges from keyboard-based ballads to more up-tempo new wave-style songs with full band backing. She played at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Swindon early in May 2009 and played the Glastonbury Festival in June 2009. Her debut single Obsessions/Mowgli’s Road was issued on Neon Gold records in the US, followed by the Crown Jewels EP in June 2009 featuring the songs I Am Not A Robot, Seventeen, Simplify and I Am Not A Robot (Remix).

A debut CD is expected to appear in January and the single release in October.
