From the 8th to the 11th of October 2009, Netaudio Berlin will be gathering the international netaudio community for a four-day music and conference festival in Berlin, under the title “East meets West”. 2009 will mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. We recall pictures of hands reaching out to pull people from both sides up onto the Berlin wall. The event will take place at Maria, a venue situated immediately on the former Berlin ‘death strip’ once dividing the city and the world into eastern and western hemispheres.

In recent years a netaudio landscape has emerged in the countries of Eastern Europe. Speakers, artists and netlabel managers from Eastern and Western Europe as well as from the USA are invited to find out more about the needs and possibilities, challenges and chances of netaudio under the various cultural frameworks and to discuss new opportunities for networking and collaboration across borders and cultures.

The musical focus lies on a selection of Berlin’ finest electronic music, namely, House, Techno and Minimal. However, many artists from the fields of Ambient, Noise, Dub, Drum’n’Bass, Pop, Triphop, Dubstep, Breakbeats, Drone, Hip Hop and Techdub will add to the varied musical program. Although the netaudio scene consists of artists mostly unknown to the broader public, many names have already earned international recognition. This is reflected in the lineup of the evenings programme, crowned by such illustrious figures as Pheek, D. Diggler, Erich Lesovsky, Marc Schneider, Goldwill, Tanith, Stereoshape, SCSI-9, Disrupt, Holger Flinsch, Marko Fürstenberg, and the Kraftfuttermischwerk. With over 100 participating artists spread over 3 nights, the netaudio festival gives a comprehensive insight into the various musical genres and brings netaudio music to life for participants and visitors. The day program includes numerous workshops and discussions with top experts as well as a film program, showcases, netaudio fair, and various contributions from other art forms.

The Berliner Crew has benefited from their experience during the previous Berlin Festival in 2007 and from their involvement with international partners in London, Moscow, Barcelona and Bologna. In addition to their ambition to further develop the netaudio scene worldwide, the organizers also hope to strengthen the position of Berlin as a hub between East and West, by integrating various netlabels from all parts of Europe. The organizers are sending a signal of exclamation to the netaudio community, especially in the countries of Eastern Europe that this will be the largest, most diverse and simply the most exciting Netaudio Festival of all time!

Basim Usmani is bassist for The Kominas, a group that blends traditional sounds with punk rock beats.

They’re young. They’re punk. And they’re rocking both their Muslim and American worlds with their music, lyrics and style.

“A lot of times people say, ‘Oh wow, look, brown people playing music’ [but] it’s more than that,” said 25-year-old Pakistani-American Shahjehan Khan, the lead singer for a Muslim punk band, The Kominas.

The Boston-based band is one of a handful of Muslim punk bands that emerged in the United States in the past few years.

The members of this four-person rock group with South Asian roots hold varying views on religion. One says he’s an atheist; three others identify as Muslims — both practicing and non-practicing. For them, punk music is a way to rebel against their conservative cultural upbringing and the frustrations of growing up a young Muslim in America.

“We aren’t [just] some alternative to a stereotypical Muslim. We actually might be offering some sort of insights for people at large about religion, about the world,” said 26-year-old bassist Basim Usmani.

Blending traditional South Asian rhythms with punk rock beats, they sing in both English and Punjabi. (Kominas means “scum-bag” in Punjabi, according to the band.) Their songs can be at once political, serious, satirical and insinuating.

Their risqué lyrics and provocative song titles such as “Sharia Law in the USA,” “Suicide Bomb the GAP” and “Rumi was a Homo” — a protest song against homophobia in the American Muslim community — have drawn the attention of Muslims, non-Muslims, fans and critics alike.

“You sort of have to throw it in peoples’ faces and be shocking in order to give people a different way to think about stuff,” said Usmani.

“These punk, metal and rap scenes – so-called extreme music scenes — are addressing issues that mainstream music doesn’t,” said Mark LeVine, a professor of Middle Eastern history at University of California, Irvine, who is also a musician and author of “Heavy Metal Islam.”

“[Punk] allows them to rebel against society and their own culture at the same time,” he said. iReport: Is Islam at odds with American values?

Before the Islamic punk movement in North America had a voice, it had a story. The Muslim punk scene began to gel in 2003 when novelist and convert to Islam, Michael Muhammad Knight self-published his book, “The Taqwacores” about a fictional Muslim punk scene in Buffalo, New York.

The book opens with a poem called “Muhammed was a Punk Rocker” and describes both conventional and unconventional characters including a Shi’ite skinhead, a conservative Sunni Muslim, a burka-wearing feminist punk and a Sufi who sports a Mohawk and drinks alcohol.

“The punk rock kids I would hang out with weren’t even Muslim,” 31-year old Knight recalls. “They were so fiercely individualistic — I wish that I could be a Muslim in that way: not be ashamed of my confusion, not be ashamed of my doubts. Just be myself and be proud of who I am.”

The novel’s title, “Taqwacore,” is a hybrid word stemming from the Arabic “taqwa,” meaning “god consciousness,” and “core” referring to “hardcore” — a genre of punk music. It’s now a general term for Muslim punk rock.

The popularity of the book, which Knight said was born out of a search to find his identity as a Muslim-American, grew in underground youth circles and online.

It didn’t take long before real-life “taqwacore” bands like The Kominas began blooming across the country.

“It makes sense why punk has been the music of choice for young, politically active Muslims who are musical,” said LeVine. “The straight edge movement in punk which was about no drugs, no alcohol, was clean yet very intense and political. It’s a way for them to rebel against their families in some extreme ways yet still be ritualistically, ‘good Muslims.’ ”

“Taqwacore” gave voice to many young Muslim-Americans who felt muted by circumstances and created an opening for bands like Al-Thawra, Vote Hezbollah, and Secret Trial Five — an all-girl punk band out of Vancouver, Canada.

In the summer of 2007, five of the taqwacore bands organized a “taqwa-tour” of the northeastern United States. They played in city after city, traveling in a green school bus with TAQWA painted on the front bought by Knight for $2,000 on eBay.

This summer, The Kominas continue to strike a chord with audiences around the country, hitting cities from San Francisco to New York on a multi-city tour.

The taqwacore movement has also inspired two upcoming films – a dramatic feature film based on the book and a documentary.

Many conservative Muslims may peg young taqwacores as heretic for their suggestive and irreverent lyrics. But the musicians say they are just trying to show both cultures how broad the spectrum of belief can be.

Like many young adults balancing their religious beliefs with American culture, some young Muslims in the United States say it’s a constant struggle to be accepted in both worlds.

“I had a lot of conflicted feelings growing up a Muslim in America,” said 25-year-old Kominas drummer Imran Malik. “It was hard not being able to do the same things that everyone else around you is doing without feeling guilty about them.”

Knight, who grew up with a Catholic mother and white supremacist father, converted to Islam when he was 16. He said his message is not one of blasphemy but rather an extension of his discontent with the rigid etiquette that dictates certain practices within Islam and the stereotypes of Muslims in American.

“Muslims haven’t been fully accepted as Americans but the American experience hasn’t been accepted as something that can contribute to the Muslim world,” said Knight.

Knight said writing the book helped him and others connect through shared experiences.

“When I first wrote it, I felt like there would never be a place for me in the Muslim community and that has really turned around a lot,” he said. “The book gave me the community I needed, it connected me to all these kids that were also confused and who also went through the things that I went through.”

That connection is vital to taqwacore music, bassist Usmani said.

“The music is great, but the conversation is the key to all of this. The dialogue that we have inspired is really invaluable.”

“I don’t think Islam is ever going to go away, I’m just trying to see how it best fits in my life.”

THE REACTOR FILES: DESTINY’S TEARDROP

You hear it in the distance; the throbbing rhythms of the universe align as planets spin into uncharted musical territories from beyond the trance. Inthe early nineties Ben Watkins set out to bring the world a culture clash of sonic textures that defies the word fusion. Although Juno Reactor has noband members and never will, Watkins set out to mold it’s destiny with various collaborators an intense ambient soundtrack emerged to accompany ‘The Missile Project.’ It could have been the inspiration from the obelisk in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 A Space Odyssey or the famous plaster caster of the sixties, but Juno’s name evolved from a seventy foot long concrete structure that Ben’s girlfriend dreamed up and named Juno Reactor. The music transcends the name bridging multiple cultures and ancient religions alike.

Today the teardrop evolves, forever changing; while the eternal cries of the live Reactor can be heard worldwide. Welcome to ‘the ceremony,’ ethnic chaos in harmony, where the ancients meet the geniuses of Silicon Valley to celebrate the fusion of past and future to create the now. A circus from the netherworld featuring incantations, chants, vocals, lighting, mesmerizing visualizations, and raw live action. From the tribes of the past to the rock bands of the future, the Reactors live energy is showcased by two concerts in Japan.

The first, Live in Tokyo (2001), was recorded in surround sound and features revelations from Shango, Conga Fury, and God Is God. This is the beginning of Juno’s live essence, from the mind-expanding musicianship to the acrobatics of Amampondo, and all the glimmering hypnotic visuals, it’s a journey to encounter, but be careful, some have never returned.

The second DVD Audio Visual Experience was also recorded in Tokyo (2007) and is the most accurate vision of Juno live today. Drawing from its primitive roots and fueled by its high tech sonics, the Reactor emerges as a modern day film in flux, its Watkins motion picture experiences that drive the new Reactor at the speed of light through the 21st Century. This is where you enter the Labyrinth, but where’s the exit? We’re swallowed up by Zwara, as Mabi takes on the role of a Sangoma, a spiritual healer, chanting in South African beckoning his ancestors to come and heal the children in the spiritual world. It’s his anger, frustration, that transform into a pure state of bliss, he is alive once again! In the Juno tradition this is more than music, reality transcending entertainment, taking us beyond, crossing over to the other side.

The AV Experience showcases the infinite talents of the ‘new’ live Reactor. From the classic War Dogs with the esoteric vocals of Taz, to the powerhouse drumming of Greg Ellis in Giant, to the precise, but wild guitar rants of Steve Stevens (Billy Idol), it’s the fusion of all these talents with Watkins and Amampondo that create a live musical experience which goes beyond the studio, unlocking a door to the unknown for all to explore. Their strength is revealed in Angels and Men as the players react off of each others performances instinctually. A spiritual journey, the musicians are released flying together in harmony, unfolding before our very eyes and ears. In 1993 a glimmer of light peeked through as the journey began. Juno Reactor’s album, Transmissions has led to seven sonic adventures including Luciana (95) the inspiration for ‘The Missile Project,’ Beyond the Infinite (96), Bible of Dreams (97), Shango (2000), Odyssey 1992-2002 (03), and the two albums that currently define the Reactor’s morphing style, Labyrinth (04) and Gods and Monsters (08). Juno’s music has also been adapted by many filmmakers over the years in Mortal Kombat, Eraser, Virtuosity, Lost In Space, the Romeo & Juliet trailer, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, The Anamatrix, Final Flight of the Osiris (special short Matrix animated film), and Secuestro Express as well as heard at baseball, basketball, and grid iron football games, the Japanese Grand Prix, and on Play Station®’s Jet Mojo3.

These musical styles have propelled the Reactor through a cinematic black hole to discover new and uncharted worlds. As trance, break beat, techno, industrial, pop, rock, dance, and world, filtered themselves through Watkins experiences, the vibe transformed into electronic soundscapes accompanied by raw primitive rhythms, instinct meets technology, and the Juno universe is reborn. 1997 was the beginning of a new era and style as Ben Watkins fused with Amampondo, a South African (Cape Town) percussive ensemble. Their first collaboration was Shango, named after the Nigerian God of Thunder; this represents the beginning of a new live element. As time passed many myths and legends were explored, ranging from South African tribalism to Celtic mythology to Mexican rituals, but it was Labyrinth that encapsulated every cell of musical influence Watkins had evolved with. This new found influence began to develop with Ben’s adventure into the film music world with The Wachowski brothers and composer Don Davis on The Matrix: Reloaded and The Matrix: Revolutions. This led to Watkins scoring Brave Story, (A Japanese feature Anime) but it was The Matrix syndrome which actually birthed Labyrinth’s turn of events and led to the incredibly diverse Gods and Monsters. The new album still gives us those Matrix moments in Tanta Pena, journeys into uncharted territories that cross cultural boundaries. Ben performs on the edge of a razor blade as his mainstream lead vocalizations merge with the Reactor’s past hum to produce a completely different style splintering into infinity.

The future of the Reactor drags the past into its unsuspecting web to open a new dimension as Watkins vocalizations are the closest element that lets Juno enter the mainstream. Still the music pulls you right back into its tangled creative web, seducing a world of new listeners who will plug into the reactor for the first time, but still pleasing those who have been lost in the Juno universe forever. Whether it’s on the Mexican horizon in Inca Steppa, Frank Sinatra’s space odyssey in a city born out of madness and violence called Las Vegas, the hordes of Babylon in City of the Sinful, releasing yourself in Mind of the Free, the apocalyptic Immaculate Crucifixion, that scheming jerk in Perfect Crime, a simple vision of a Pretty Girl, or just the mysterious panoramic view of a city called Tokyo, Gods and Monsters unleashes a counter culture of esoteric delights. You can hear it in the driving percussion of Gocoo (the all female percussion ensemble from Japan), the South African rhythms of Amampondo, Mabi’s magical chants, and the band just playing their hearts out. Juno Reactor has become a musical tour de force to be reckoned with. The day of reckoning is at hand; once again the Reactor has cracked open, shaking us asunder, revealing Gods and Monsters in a world unbeknownst to all. Gods and Goddesses celebrating cacophony as technology twists and turns against the grain revealing the ancients into the light. It’s been Sixteen years of evolution as the teardrop is still falling, waiting for a resting place, while destiny changes it forever.

When it comes to electronic dance-music, one would be hard-pressed to make the argument that Brooklyn is on a par with, say, Detroit or Berlin. But if Brooklyn wasn’t part of NYC, and was instead was an independent municipality (which was actually the case until 1898), it would be the country’s fifth-largest city. In an era where Boulder, Colorado, can have an electronic-music festival—that burg’s Communikey get-together is a damn fine one, by the way—surely the county of Kings should host its own fest. At least, that’s the thinking behind the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival, which will be taking over the postindustrial arts space Old American Can Factory for a sprawling12-hour hoedown on Saturday 8.
